🇺🇦 Yesterday we finished up the first full national meeting of Direct Relief partner organizations in #Ukraine in quite some time. Although everyone agrees that the war is precariously balanced at this moment, their spirits remain high. 🚑 These are people from almost every corner of the country who have spent the past 2+ years delivering medicine, providing emergency care (both physical and mental), performing reconstructive surgeries, fitting children with prosthetics, collecting data, repairing power supplies, and making sure that health care supply chains heavily burdened by conflict do not break. 👫 It's a marvel to hear their ideas and their passion, hopes, and persistence. We really owe it to them and the communities they support not to let them down as the geopolitical plate tectonics shift beneath our feet.

With 2024’s Atlantic hurricane season shaping up to be as active as early forecasts had predicted, Medical Professionals On a Mission (MPOM) is using a grant from Direct Relief to organize and equip a rapid-response team of Caribbean expatriate medical professionals working in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, all ready to quickly deploy to the Caribbean islands to help residents recover from hurricanes. The grant will be used in part to create the communications systems needed to coordinate a roster of volunteers who deploy to a stricken country, and real-time monitoring systems to track the availability and deployment of medical resources. https://lnkd.in/eQrYfWjR.

Following Hurricane Beryl, Spring Branch Community Health Center experienced power outages for several days across its eight clinics. Despite obstacles, the clinics continued to provide care to those impacted by the storm. Spring Branch Community Health Center received an emergency health kit, eight emergency medical backpacks, and 20 hygiene kits from Direct Relief. Direct Relief will continue to work closely with partners to meet health care needs in affected communities, and is committed to replenishing supplies and increasing medical resilience via its Hurricane Preparedness Program. https://lnkd.in/eZM4p_p6

🌐 We finished up the #Ukraine humanitarian geo-messaging workshop today with incredible energy, creativity, and intelligence from all of the organizations involved. 🤔 Key insights: 1 > Coordination is not meetings; coordination is communication. In order to accomplish shared goals safely and efficiently the most essential element is to communicate fluently, rapidly, and specifically. 2 > Technology plays a crucial role in coordination when it enables the key people involved in a process to understand the most salient factors at the most significant moments ... as those moments change over time and space. And if it does not do this then it's likely to be more of a problem than a solution. 3 > Local actors must have control over the technologies and the information that enable them to respond to crisis, not because it's better or more ethical in some philosophically abstract sense, but because they literally know better what needs to be done - they just need the tools and resources to accomplish it. A huge thanks to all of the incredible Ukrainians who are showing so many of us what real courage looks like. Direct Relief Balcony.io

According to organizations that form the Ukraine health cluster, “no one provided a complete course of chemotherapy in a city under siege before,” said Ross Skowronski, who founded Mission Kharkiv 18 months ago. “So it looks like we are the first NGO in the world, despite that we are very small, who did that,” he adds with some wonderment at how far the NGO with 15 employees has come in such a short time. https://lnkd.in/e_Yp54RV

Dengue, the mosquito-borne illness, is growing in range and case numbers. In response, Direct Relief, guided by health providers, has developed a dengue treatment kit. Each kit is designed to treat mild cases of dengue in 100 people, and includes mosquito repellents, oral rehydration salts, acetaminophen to control fever and aches, and thermometers. Dozens of the kits have been shipped across the Americas to date, including 12 to organizations in Puerto Rico. https://lnkd.in/ewVqG9HV

This week I'm in Ukraine for the first time with colleagues from Direct Relief and Balcony.io to implement phase 1 of a new project supported by Grand Challenges Canada on geo-messaging for humanitarian coordination, staff safety, and security. Ukraine is at a precarious moment right now and it's more important than ever to make sure they have the tools, resources, and knowledge to survive the next phases of this war and to thrive and rebuild afterwards.
