Today marks the start of Disability Pride Month. This month honors the disability community's history, achievements, and struggles. It originated in the U.S. in 1990 to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law, and the first Disability Pride Day was held in Boston that same year! Our Ability+ employee resource group will be hosting events throughout the month to celebrate and educate the Draper community.

Draper recently sponsored a Folds of Honor charity golf tournament in Concord, Mass. with proceeds to benefit scholarships for family members of fallen or disabled veterans. Four Draper employees, members of our Military and Veterans employee resource group (ERG), supported the event in different ways—all enjoyed a rewarding experience. We are excited to introduce DraperSPARX, a pioneering partnership program to empower technology companies to rapidly prototype, validate and prove new technologies for scaled government adoption. Startups and small businesses are innovation engines that need a champion to nurture, mature and commercialize emergent technologies to make them available to the Department of Defense, U.S. government and the defense sector. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth. In 1980, Texas led the way by becoming the first state to recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday. Now, all 50 states and the District of Columbia honor this significant day. Juneteenth marks the moment when the last community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas received news of their freedom—an essential milestone in history that we honor and remember.

Brennan McPherson is an Information System Security Officer, making sure our networks are following government standards and compliance as well as auditing users for Insider Threat. He is also a co-lead of our LGBTQIA+ ERG and we asked him a few questions in honor of Pride Month: Why is having an LGBTQIA+ ERG at Draper important ? “It is important for any group to have a place to come together, bond over something in common, and to share new things in a welcoming space. It is how we feel safe, secure, and appreciated. I think for one’s identity, especially when that identity is under threat in our own politics, it becomes even more important to stand together to support and uplift one another. Having an ERG dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community is a wonderful thing for Draper. It aids in educating employees and fostering empathy, demonstrating to potential hires that they are welcomed here.” What does pride mean to you ? “Pride is finding out who you truly are, being that authentic person, and celebrating it. We are taught so many social norms from a young age so being able to peel that back and be who you want to be is awesome and deserves to be celebrated.”

Hearing loss affects more than 250 million people worldwide. To address the condition, Draper developed a MEMS-based implantable drug-delivery device over a decade ago. This week IEEE Spectrum hailed Draper’s device as one of 40 that has been powering a revolution in microelectromechanical systems—MEMS. https://lnkd.in/gr8Rng-j #MEMS #IEEE
