Econolite's Douglas Tarico presented today at the IMSA Forum & Expo on the topic of Leveraging Digital Twin Technology to Minimizing Intersection Conflicts. Digital Twin (DT) technology has and continues to be widely adopted and applied to help optimize complex systems and operations in many industries, including enterprise networking, retail, healthcare, structural engineering, manufacturing, and production operations, etc. For transportation, Digital Twins in the Intelligent Transport Systems by Andrey Rudskoy et al., DT is described as a detailed digital reproduction of the roadway, enabling modeling and to test solutions and simulate different scenarios and events. This can significantly mitigate conflicts. The ITS era ushered in the necessary Information Technology-based traffic management platform to leverage DT to dynamically optimize traffic signal operations. Until now, the industry has not experienced the consolidation of sensor, data aggregation and analytics, and machine learning software technologies necessary to power the real-time applications that actively optimize traffic signal control programming necessary to dynamically enhance roadway safety and efficiencies. Today, the convergence of high-resolution real-time traffic data, cloud-based computing, and modeling software with predictive analytics provides the prospect for a real-time cyber representation of vehicle traffic in a transportation network, or digital twin. Combining higher resolution and real-time traffic data available from new sensors, cloud-based analytics, and modeling/simulation software technologies, DT technology, as a data-driven strategy, can be applicable for actively optimizing traffic signal programming and roadway operations. Doug's presentation illustrated how DT technology, as it relates to traffic signal control, can provide a digital real-time virtual version of a roadway’s traffic signal operations. His presentation highlighted how a two-way real-time traffic data exchange between the actual roadway and its cyber counterpart can provide a powerful strategy to model, analyze, and test actual traffic conditions to optimize traffic signal operations and safety. Moreover, by applying the traffic signal performance measures, data-driven modeling, and Machine Learning (ML) and AI algorithms there is the potential to open new doors to effectively apply cooperative awareness and predictive capabilities that will deliver profound benefits for safer mobility. #Umovity #MobiltyForHumanity #IMSA #DigitalTwin #Centracs #PTVflows

Econolite's Gary Carlin, PE, PTP presented today at the IMSA Forum & Expo on the topic of Improving Transportation Safety Through High-Resolution Data and Cloud-Based Arterial Performance Analysis. One of the biggest challenges in the transportation industry today is the lack of time to address current traffic challenges, improve operations, and prepare for future transportation needs. Yet the pressures to improve efficiencies and safety, as well as respond to dynamic traffic changes are increasing. The promise of big data and analytics is targeting the lack of time to help improve transportation efficiencies and, in turn, safety. There are a few leading agencies that are embracing and exploring the multi-tiered opportunities that big data and analytics provide. The practice of using big data and analytics in traffic management includes collecting relevant and appropriate resolution sensor information from various sources in a very short amount of time. The gathered data is then used for analysis to identify traffic patterns, potential conflicts, roadway hazards, and classify roadway users that will help predict future traffic events, movements, and volumes. However, the low traffic data resolution and delays in said data proved problematic in trying to adjust to the dynamic nature of traffic, including changes in patterns, congestion, planned and unplanned incidents, and other traffic variables. Previous centralized software platforms that are primarily located on on-site servers, where performance measures and analytics are a manual process, are not able to keep up with the real-time demands of future traffic operations. What is needed is a more intelligent and holistic approach to effectively employ a cloud-based solution that will truly enable real-time adaptive signal operations, optimize arterial traffic management, intelligently automated operations, and support the connected vehicle applications. This is particularly critical for enhancing safety in a dynamic roadway environment, including Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) traffic management programs. Gary's presentation discussed the future requirements of a next-generation cloud-based traffic management platform of integrated smart mobility technologies. His presentation also detailed the critical cloud-based technologies that traffic control systems will require for a safer mobility future, as well as provide examples of currently deployed cloud-based big data and analytical systems that have improved transportation operations and services. Lastly, Gary discussed real-world examples of how several cities are currently leveraging real-time monitoring and performance analysis capabilities for their day-to-day operations, as well as actively preparing for CAV programs. #Umovity #MobilityForHumanity #IMSA #Centracs #ATSPM

Econolite's Douglas Tarico presented today at the IMSA Forum & Expo on the topic of Roadway Situational Awareness Needed for the Vision Zero Future. The transportation industry is on the cusp of providing new capabilities enabled by new technologies that can instantaneously sense geo-positional information and other useful attributes of all roadway users, including pedestrians and bicyclists. In the prior era, inductive roadway loops and other sources of zone-only presence detection provided the primary basis of input to our traffic control methodologies. However, ITS standards for traffic control equipment, NTCIP standards for traffic control software, and ITE’s traffic engineering formulations for signal timing were all designed around the real-time measurement of roadway users. This has helped clear a revolutionary path for new roadway sensor technologies that can provide significantly greater capabilities, enabling transportation engineers to apply new traffic control principles that will enhance safety and efficiencies for all users. The integration of these new technologies can provide situational awareness and help make significant strides toward optimizing intersection safety and corridor signal control strategies that will accelerate the industry toward Vision Zero. Sensor technologies today can detect and classify vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and other roadway users, including their geospatial trajectories in real-time. These capabilities are enabling detection of real-time safety conflicts, including near-miss events, red-light running, excessive vehicle queueing, and many other critical events that can be used as inputs to real-time intersection control and optimization. Doug's presentation focused on how new sensor technologies are enabling real-time intersection control and optimization. His presentation featured real-world examples of how new sensor technology is providing true situational awareness at the intersection and the potential to provide new traffic control applications. #Umovity #MobilityForHumanity #VisionZero #IntersectionSafety #IMSA #EVORADAR #AutoscopeVision

In early 2024, UDOT began developing a Battery Backup System (BBS) tailored for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The system, designed to operate in extreme conditions with a minimum four-hour power supply, reflects UDOT’s commitment to advancing mobility and safety. Challenges such as Utah’s diverse geography and climate spurred UDOT to seek a solution that could withstand temperatures from 0° to 140°F, integrate seamlessly with solar arrays, and require minimal maintenance over a five-to-eight-year lifespan. Collaborating with Brigham Young University, UDOT evaluated Econolite’s ZX graphene Super Capacitor, finding it exceeded expectations with up to 9.25 hours of runtime, maintenance-free operation, and a 30-year lifespan. This sustainable solution eliminates traditional battery maintenance costs and is being phased in statewide to enhance reliability during power outages.
