From Portland General Electric's Allegra Hodges, Ph.D. as a part of Energy Central's recent Innovation Special Issue: "In preschool classrooms, kids are encouraged to wonder, play and experiment in a safe and supportive environment as a way of learning about the world. As they age, their environments tend to shift to emphasize the importance of performance and outcomes. At the same time, their brains develop to the point where they internalize that set of expectations. For some, it can lead to a sense of apprehension around being evaluated, and that can be especially acute when asked to try new things. The upshot is that some might even stop trying. Whether we like it or not, we carry those implicit expectations through adulthood – meaning that if we’re particularly attuned to what people think of the outcomes work that we do, we might hesitate to participate in the inherently risky work of innovation and creativity because by its very nature it’s not clear where that work will end up and how it will be evaluated. And yet as organizations and as people, the learnings we can extract from those pursuits are extremely valuable. But before expecting that people just dive in to be creative, we have to make sure that they feel safe to do so. We’ve seen in research (for example, Diehl & Stroebe in 1987) that people who fear negative consequences are less likely to participate in brainstorming sessions. For kids in school, are they worried about putting something out there that will provoke their classmates to make fun of them? For our teams at Portland General Electric (PGE), are they nervous that putting time into a potential solution that doesn’t pan out will be a stain on their end of year review? From Salesforce's Taksina Eammano: "Today’s customers want faster, more personalized service and expect companies to deliver. Field service is no exception. Our research found that 74% of mobile workers say that customer expectations are higher than they used to be, and 73% say customers expect a personal touch more than they used to. These expectations underscore the field service trends we’re seeing." Read more about the steps to take from Taksina on Energy Central: https://lnkd.in/ewhy4_4j
