A glassmaking facility in Meadville, PA had shut down in 2020 in response to slowing demand from the US auto industry and the effects of the pandemic. In 2023, First Solar signed an agreement with Vitro Architectural Glass to manufacture float glass for its American-made solar modules in the factory. In response, Vitro announced it would invest $93.6 million to rebuild and modernize the plant, creating approximately 130 new high-quality jobs. Vitro then increased its investment to about $180 million to upgrade the facility. The plant is expected to be operational in 2025, bringing the jobs, economic growth, and tax revenues that domestic manufacturing stimulates. Due to First Solar’s presence, Ohio can uniquely claim to be home to every aspect of the solar value chain, from R&D and glass, steel, and module manufacturing to recycling. As The Blade put it: First Solar “has turned Toledo into the nation’s leading renewable energy manufacturing center.” First Solar directly employs 2,400 workers in the state and is estimated to have generated approximately 10,505 total jobs including direct, indirect, and induced economic effects. For every First Solar job, an estimated 4.4 total jobs were created in the Ohio economy in 2023, with more than $1 billion in estimated labor income generated in Ohio that year. American steel forms the backbone of First Solar’s US-made Series 7 panels. The transformation from iron ore to steel rolls to finished back rails all happens within a 100-mile radius of First Solar’s Ohio factories: the steel is made in Cleveland, processed in Delta, and fabricated into back rails in Bowling Green.
