Forced labor can endure for generations or a lifetime, shaped by the coercion type, social context, and perpetrator’s will. Bonded laborers may transfer their debt to their offspring, perpetuating the cycle. Recruitment for forced labor may be specific, such as for mining or construction, and can be long-term, short-term, temporary, or seasonal, like during harvest cycles. Descent-based slavery, tied to historical discrimination, can persist indefinitely. The duration is also affected by the perpetrator’s control and the victim’s ability to escape or seek help. #ForcedLabor #HumanRights #FreeTheSlaves #EndSlavery Source: https://lnkd.in/gFYN_Fyu

This includes debt bondage among migrants exploited within the region, hereditary forms of bonded labour in South Asia, and state-imposed forced labour in China, North Korea, and other countries. The prevalence of forced marriage in Asia and the Pacific is second highest in the world, after the Arab States, impacting an estimated 4.5 females and 2.1 males per every thousand people. 🚫A staggering 36% of coerced workers in the private sector are trapped by withheld salaries. Coercion doesn't stop there: threats against personal safety or family, financial penalties, and exploitation of vulnerabilities are among the sinister tactics employers use to enforce forced labor. Direct threats and exploitation of vulnerability each impact around 20% of adults in forced labor. Financial penalties and manipulative debt coerce another 15% into inescapable work situations. Awareness and action are our most powerful tools. Together, we can fight against these injustices and stand up for the rights and dignity of all workers. #EndForcedLabor #StandAgainstCoercion Source: https://lnkd.in/e6rq52Dk

🌍 Transforming Lives in the Fight Against Trafficking In Senegal's Kedougou Region, where artisanal gold mining drives up demand for commercial sex, the risk of sex trafficking escalates dangerously. Free the Slaves is on the ground, collaborating with the Center on Human Trafficking Research & Outreach at UGA on Human Trafficking Research & Outreach, local law enforcement, and NGOs to make a real difference. 👀 Through training local Community Vigilance Committees, we're empowering residents to spot and report exploitative situations. Our efforts extend beyond borders, as survivors receive care and are safely repatriated to their homes in Nigeria, where they begin new lives with dignity and independence. ✨ Issa Saka, our West Africa Director, recently visited Nigeria to witness the profound impact of these initiatives. He met survivors who, with newfound self-esteem and community respect, are thriving—running businesses, training for new careers, and rebuilding their lives. 🔗 Dive deeper into their stories of resilience and the ongoing need for robust support systems in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/g3FJbHCM #HopeInAction #EndModernSlavery These activities are funded by the U.S. Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. On May 18, 2024, leaders and advocates gathered at a crucial multi-stakeholder dialogue spearheaded by Free the Slaves, MSEMVS, and Verite to tackle the pressing issues within the India-GCC migration corridor. 🔍 A key moment was the unveiling of a critical survey report by Mr. Bhanuja Lal Sharan of MSEMVS. The report casts light on the heavy financial burdens migrant workers endure, exposing an alarming fact: workers are paying an average of $1,200 in recruitment fees—costs that, according to the ILO, should be the responsibility of employers. 🔗 Learn more about the dialogue's outcomes and how they pave the way for safer, more equitable migration: https://lnkd.in/g7VZDWjq
