Another matchmaking success story deep dive! In Q1 we helped Kiss My Keto reduce their carrier rates by 41% and expand to a bi-coastal fulfillment setup. Excited to describe the process here: 1. Kiss My Keto's previous 3PL partner could not keep up with the brand's continuous omnichannel growth 2. Kiss My Keto needed a 3PL with multiple locations across the US, temperature control capabilities, and the ability to custom kit for Retail and DTC 3. Before reaching out to Fulfill, Michael Herscu relied on manual google searches to find 3PL candidates, which was time consuming, so he reached out to Fulfill 4. Fulfill turned around 3PL recommendations in early Q1 that met Kiss My Keto's capability requirements, and exceeded price criteria 5. With multiple impressive candidates, we helped analyze the options based on fulfillment fees, service-level agreements, and alignment with growth plans 6. After running a brief kitting time study and fulfillment test, Kiss My Keto partnered with Courtney Abel and the team at Brandfox, achieving: - 41% reduction in carrier rates for 10+ lbs packages - 25% reduction in kitting and shipping costs - 15 hours saved during the 3PL vetting process Michael's feedback: “The Fulfill team helped us understand the strategy behind distributing goods across multiple 3PLs. They also helped us navigate monthly maintenance fees and our service-level agreement. Really, really thankful for our partnership.” Full case study here: https://lnkd.in/eJs7iwMA

I understand why the thought of outsourcing to a 3PL for the first time (or switching 3PLs) is daunting for brand owners. If you’re moving from in-house fulfillment to 3PL, you’re going to give up a large portion of control over the final touchpoint on your product before it gets to the customer's doorstep. If you’re switching 3PLs, it’s likely due to issues with your current provider, and naturally, you’re going to be hesitant towards any new 3PL with a pitch that is something along the lines of “well we're not like them, so you should give me your business instead” ... 🧐 There’s more than 20,000 3PLs globally, each with slightly different offerings - and to complicate things, many great operators in the 3PL space don’t do the best job of highlighting their specializations online in a way that is easily discoverable for eCommerce brands. Internally at Fulfill, we assign each 3PL on our network an ideal customer profile based on their preferences across: - 6 sales channels - 6 tiers of monthly order volume - 6 tiers of storage footprints - 20 niches - 10 specialty solutions - 21 value added services - 8 SKU count profiles - 5 package weight ranges - 6 EDI capabilities - 8 warehouse certifications - 6 storage conditions - 6 security options - 5 ownership structures - 7 3PL classifications - 10 core value propositions That’s 15 categories and 130 data points 🤓 Often, for a 3PL to be the right fit for a brand, you need to be aligned across the majority of those buckets. For example - as a brand, you might need to find a 3PL that: 1) supports your multiple sales channels 2) accepts your lower volume but can handle a higher sku count 3) has experience in your niche 4) provides unique value added services 5) has specific storage conditions 6) is privately owned… The requirements could go on for a while! And if one of those is missing, it wouldn’t be a good fit. We haven’t even talked about price, location needs, or soft-touch data like the 3PLs expansion plans (merger, acquisitions, new warehouse locations), years of operation, monthly minimum requirements, startup preferences and more. This is not to dissuade brands from working with 3PLs (wouldn't be the smartest of moves as a business owner that relies on helping brands find 3PLs), but rather to highlight the complexity of logistics - in my opinion what makes it so interesting. It’s not just picking, packing, and shipping.

We’re entering the thick of 3PL RFP season. Not all brands align with this timeframe, but generally the summer months are your time to prep for Q4 peak. Below is a recommended timeframe for brands conducting a 3PL RFP, designed to: 1️⃣ Give yourself breathing room to analyze your current setup 2️⃣ See if a move makes sense 3️⃣ Negotiate with 3PLs, and... 4️⃣ Leave ample time for a smooth transition 🗓️ July - Early July > build your core criteria for an ideal 3PL partner, taking into account growth plans over the next 6 - 18 months - Mid July > identify a shortlist of 3PLs for participation in your RFP, that align with your core criteria - Late July > begin conversations with 3PLs, solicit proposals and narrow down to a final few 🗓️ August - Early August > negotiate terms with your shortlist, to achieve ideal economics - Mid August > schedule warehouse tours with your top candidates to view the ops in person and meet with their leadership - Late August > identify ideal partner and finalize contracting 🗓️ September - Early September > begin onboarding with 3PL - Mid to late September > complete onboarding with 3PL 🗓️ Q4 - scale.... This tentative schedule gives you plenty of time to: ☑️ Decide if making a 3PL move makes sense for your brand ☑️ Determine who your ideal 3PL partner is ☑️ Negotiate preferred terms ☑️ Move inventory to your new 3PL Well before the frenzy of BFCM / Holiday peak is upon you.

Helping exceptional founders build great companies in optimized supply chain, smart manufacturing, and commerce enablement

The difference between a good and great 3PL partner is huge. Great 3PLs not only handle fulfillment, but support the brand through marketing, sales distribution, and more. Might be hard to see the difference as a brand if you haven't worked with a truly exceptional partner, but once you have, the difference is clear as day.
