Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
About us
Imagine joining a group of individuals—each with their own unique skills and passions, but united by a common purpose. Imagine yourself at Girl Scouts! Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, is one of the largest in the USA, serves more than 28,000 girls in a 32 county area throughout western Ohio and southeast Indiana. Nearly 11,000 adult volunteers work to provide services and deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls. Four regional Girl Scout Centers are located in Cincinnati, Dayton, Lima and Toledo. Why Girl Scouts—Diversity was the founding idea of Girl Scouting in 1912. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA serves girls in every zip code, from the inner city to the prairie. GSUSA serves girls in urban community centers, churches, mosques and temples. Girl Scouts serves girls across income and demographic groups, and the national membership mirrors the U.S. population figures. The journey begins with the Girl Scout environment itself. A girl’s leadership blooms among other girls–away from school pressures, social cliques and boys–where girls can be themselves and try new things. In Girl Scouts activities are girl-led. Girls learn by doing and the learning is cooperative not competitive. We also focus on what girls need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Congratulations to this year's national $5,000 Gold Award Scholarship recipient from western Ohio — Sydney R.! Sydney earned her Gold Award in 2023 with her project to share education around internet and telephone scams with the senior population in her hometown of Vandalia. 💚 Sydney's achievements also include her time serving as a Girl Board Member on GSWO's Board of Directors for the 2023-24 term. She graduated from Carroll High School this spring and is headed to Dartmouth in the fall. Three cheers for you, Sydney! 🌟👏

Meet Gold Award Girl Scout Alice! 🌟 Concerned about the negative effects of trash on the environment, Alice designed and implemented a "Think About Your Trash" patch program for local Girl Scouts and other scouting organizations. Her program allowed one month for participants to complete five out of 15 activities — like listing what each person threw away, recycled, and/or composted in a day. Alice also held workshop events for her patch program, with stations for making bracelets from plastic bags, learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and discussing how to reduce trash. To educate her community, Alice had a booth at a Centerville-Washington Parks District event. At least 115 people were impacted by her project. 💚 Congratulations on earning your Gold Award, Alice! #GSWOgold Learn more about our 2024 Gold Award Girl Scouts. >> www.gswo.org/2024goldaward

Meet Gold Award Girl Scout Ruth! 🌟 Ruth is passionate about protecting pollinators in Ohio, so for her project, she created and implemented a program to teach children in grades 1-5 about the importance of saving pollinators. Her program was held on three different dates at Aley Church in Beavercreek, where 27 students participated. Ruth facilitated four booths that highlighted Ohio pollinators, including moths, butterflies, and bees, plus a separate booth about global impact. At the end of the program, the children made take-home bug hotels to provide a habitat for pollinators. Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative (OPHI) provided 120 informational pamphlets and seed packets for her program. Ruth also created a patch program, housed on her website, to reach an even wider audience. 💚 Congratulations on earning your Gold Award, Ruth! #GSWOgold Learn more about our 2024 Gold Award Girl Scouts. >> www.gswo.org/2024goldaward

Meet Gold Award Girl Scout Jacey! 🌟 To build awareness of important transportation-related historical events that are overlooked in many school curricula, Jacey researched and facilitated two informational sessions on wrecks of famous ships and railroad incidents and how these accidents influence safety procedures and engineering today. During these presentations, she facilitated experiments and experiential activities to help participants build a better understanding of the topics and their impact on US history. At the end of each session, Jacey asked participants to join in a game of Kahoot to test how effective the class was. Jacey recorded these sessions, and her local library uploaded them to their website to share the opportunity virtually. 💚 Congratulations on earning your Gold Award, Jacey! #GSWOgold Learn more about our 2024 Gold Award Girl Scouts. >> www.gswo.org/2024goldaward

Meet Gold Award Girl Scout Rachael! 🌟 For her project, Rachael wanted to help family members of babies who are born premature, just like Rachael was. She worked to provide a welcoming space and comfort items for families who have babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She was given permission to add touches of serenity and comfort to the Family Lounge in the NICU. With her team, Rachael made about 25 fleece-tied blankets for the lounge. She also created six canvas paintings using nature scenes and inspirational Bible verses and provided a variety of notebooks and pens for parents to journal their thoughts and feelings. To promote her project and get donations, Rachael spoke with her service unit, designed a pamphlet detailing her project, and asked for feedback using a QR code. 💚 Congratulations on earning your Gold Award, Rachael! #GSWOgold Learn more about our 2024 Gold Award Girl Scouts. >> www.gswo.org/2024goldaward

Meet Gold Award Girl Scout Amber! 🌟Knowing that access to outdoor spaces and meditation helps with depression, Amber wanted to create a garden at a local nursing home. Amber originally planned to create a rosary garden, but she pivoted her efforts to focus on honoring veterans in the community. The garden includes stepping stones that represent the 13 original U.S. colonies and four additional stones to signify Ohio's status as the 17th state. Amber hosted a ceremony for the community to celebrate the opening of her patriotic garden, with volunteers from a local choir singing patriotic songs and others that led a flag-raising. 💚 Congratulations on earning your Gold Award, Amber! #GSWOgold Learn more about our 2024 Gold Award Girl Scouts. >> www.gswo.org/2024goldaward
