An Inside Sources column by Jennifer Carpenter of American Waterways Operators: "Without a trusted domestic #maritime industry connecting Hawaii to California, Alaska to Washington state, Florida to Puerto Rico, and the lower 48 states to one another, we would be dangerously vulnerable...The Jones Act is a vital asset for protecting our people and infrastructure from bad actors by limiting foreign vessels’ ability to roam our inland waterways and allowing the Coast Guard to safeguard our nation’s waterways using taxpayers’ critical dollars more efficiently. Without the law, the Coast Guard’s already difficult homeland security mission would be even more complex at a dangerous time."

We are excited to share the efficient progress we are making as the Vessel Construction Manager for the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel project for MARAD at the Philly Shipyard, Inc. The teams are putting the finishing touches on the Patriot State bound for Mass Maritime Academy later this year and the State of Maine in development behind her for Maine Maritime Academy in 2025, both afloat at the yard. For the Lone Star State for Texas A&M University Galveston Campus we are connecting sub-assembly pieces and the Golden State for California State University Maritime Academy is constructing the structural pieces. This #shipbuilding journey continues to excite us all!!! Let us know if you have any questions about this project. #VCM #NSMV Maritime Administration (MARAD) United States Department of Defense U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps NAVSEA 04 Industrial Operations US Army Corps of Engineers Military Sealift Command Missile Defense Agency

Thank you @ASBPA for sharing this message. I couldn’t agree more! Florida’s beaches and dunes play a crucial role in buffering natural and manmade resources from coastal flooding and erosion, which is essential for maintaining a healthy environment and strong economy by attracting visitors and businesses to our state. #Beaches are the cornerstone of Florida’s brand and have the strongest influence on attracting tourists (EDR, 2015).  When beaches erode, so do these benefits.  It is imperative to restore and maintain beaches and dunes through effective management strategies like beach nourishment, dune restoration, and inlet sand bypassing. The resilience of Florida’s economy depends on it. Let’s continue to invest in and protect our invaluable coastal resources for all to enjoy 🏖 🐢 🌿 🌊 .

When dreaming of their next getaway, 62% of Americans imagined their toes in the sand, sun on their skin, and salty breeze through their hair, says USA TODAY 🏖️ This dream becomes reality for the #4thOfJuly, as families flock to U.S. beaches. #Beaches are more than America’s favorite vacation destination; they are economic engines that provide critical environmental habitat. Every summer, beach destinations see a surge in #Tourism, especially during the Independence Day holiday. This influx of visitors is more than a boost for local economies; it has a profound impact on national economic output. Each year, #BeachTourists contribute to a staggering $520 billion in economic output, $240 billion in direct spending, and $36 billion in tax revenues (Houston, James, 2024. The economic value of America’s beaches, Shore & Beach, 2024, 92 (2), 33-43). Beyond the immediate economic impact, beaches play a crucial role protecting upland infrastructure from storm damage, acting as natural barriers against storms and erosion. Recognizing this, Congress considers #CoastalRiskManagement a national priority, investing millions annually in beach nourishment projects with significant returns. Federal investment in #BeachRenourishment prevented $1.9 billion of damages from Hurricane Sandy, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers, yielding substantial economic benefits and reduced risk, while enhancing America’s beloved beaches. For every $1 spent on beach nourishment annually, beach tourists generate about $3,000 in economic output, $1,400 in direct spending, and $200 in taxes (Houston 2024). This demonstrates how investing millions in beach nourishment can yield benefits worth billions. This 4th of July, perhaps while you and your family will enjoy one of America’s 470 restored beaches, remember that preserving our beaches is a worthwhile investment. The economic, environmental, and protective benefits provided by these national treasures far outweigh the cost of #BeachNourishment.

  • Time to turn the page. GLDD calendar for July 2024 features the South Boca Raton beach nourishment project—a collaborative effort in 2023 between the City of Boca Raton, the City of Deerfield Beach, and the Town of Hillsboro Beach, Florida. This project was an ASBPA "Best Restored Beach" awardee. In this photo, our 312-foot Cutter Suction Dredge Alaska is pumping beneficial use material (sand) from the Boca Raton inlet ebb shoal and strategically placing the dredged material onto the beach to help offset long-term beach erosion. Also shown are four team members from the Alaska day shift crew: Mateo Lopez; Jesus Zamarripa “Sultan”; Cesar Garza “Romo”; and Joshua Stewart “Big Man” who used their man overboard training to rescue two jet skiers who fell into the water and even with life jackets were having difficulty staying afloat. Many thanks to our quick-thinking team members! View Our Calendar here: https://bit.ly/3R4YwFa
