When dreaming of their next getaway, 62% of Americans imagined their toes in the sand, sun on their skin, and salty breeze through their hair, says USA TODAY 🏖️
This dream becomes reality for the #4thOfJuly, as families flock to U.S. beaches. #Beaches are more than America’s favorite vacation destination; they are economic engines that provide critical environmental habitat.
Every summer, beach destinations see a surge in #Tourism, especially during the Independence Day holiday. This influx of visitors is more than a boost for local economies; it has a profound impact on national economic output. Each year, #BeachTourists contribute to a staggering $520 billion in economic output, $240 billion in direct spending, and $36 billion in tax revenues (Houston, James, 2024. The economic value of America’s beaches, Shore & Beach, 2024, 92 (2), 33-43).
Beyond the immediate economic impact, beaches play a crucial role protecting upland infrastructure from storm damage, acting as natural barriers against storms and erosion. Recognizing this, Congress considers #CoastalRiskManagement a national priority, investing millions annually in beach nourishment projects with significant returns.
Federal investment in #BeachRenourishment prevented $1.9 billion of damages from Hurricane Sandy, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers, yielding substantial economic benefits and reduced risk, while enhancing America’s beloved beaches. For every $1 spent on beach nourishment annually, beach tourists generate about $3,000 in economic output, $1,400 in direct spending, and $200 in taxes (Houston 2024). This demonstrates how investing millions in beach nourishment can yield benefits worth billions.
This 4th of July, perhaps while you and your family will enjoy one of America’s 470 restored beaches, remember that preserving our beaches is a worthwhile investment. The economic, environmental, and protective benefits provided by these national treasures far outweigh the cost of #BeachNourishment.
