Everything evolves. Including us. Next week, GreenBiz Group, the media and events company co-founded by Joel Makower and Pete May 18 years ago, will undergo a rebrand to become #Trellis Group. The name of our nonprofit 501(c)3 cousin, GreenBiz.org, whose mission is to cultivate and advance a new generation of sustainability professionals of color, will remain for now. We have always strived to keep up with — and slightly ahead of — the rapidly changing sustainability field. The era in which social, political and economic issues are inextricably linked with environmental ones, a complex web of climate, plastics, biodiversity, water, social equity and other crises requires more nuanced approaches and innovative thinking — from sustainability leaders, as well as from us. So, next week when you visit us, we may look a little different, but our overall mission remains unbowed: to empower professional communities to confront the climate crisis.

💡 The first Extended Producer Responsibility law in the U.S., requiring packaging producers to contribute to the costs of recycling their materials, takes effect in Oregon on July 1, 2025. 🌱 In the coming years multiple states will implement such regulations: Colorado and Maine’s EPR laws go into effect in 2026, followed by California’s law in 2027 and Minnesota’s in 2029. Meanwhile, close to a dozen other states have EPR bills in the works. ➡️ Here’s how companies should prepare: https://buff.ly/3VWPRWU ✍️ Written by Meg Milcox.

Big energy buyers, eager to see more around-the-clock clean energy on the U.S. electric grid, are using their purchasing power to negotiate new tariffs and contracts with utilities. "Companies are not just thinking about offsetting their energy consumption," said Priya Barua, senior director of marketing and policy innovation at Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA). They want to wean themselves off gas and oil: "It’s no longer about setting goals, it’s expanding to think about decarbonization more broadly, and really trying to ensure their investments are having an impact," she said. Conversations are already paying off with other utilities. Duke Energy Corporation, which serves North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, on May 29 joined Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Nucor Corporation in announcing "Accelerating Clean Energy" tariffs that support new nuclear technologies, renewable energy, long-duration energy storage and demand-response services (which incentivize customers to shift their power usage into off-peak times).
