About us

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, known as HABD, is the largest provider of affordable housing in the state of Alabama and the 17th largest Public Housing Authority in the nation. As a leader in affordable housing, HABD's mission is to provide the highest standard of affordable housing while fostering vibrant, inclusive communities and serving as a catalyst for opportunity. With 14 traditional public housing properties and more than 22,000 residents, HABD is committed to equipping residents with the tools and resources they need to become self sufficient starting with foundation of housing. Beyond our public housing portfolio, HABD's Section 8 program supports residents by preparing them for market-rate rent. Additionally, HABD's Section 3 program works to create pathways to homeownership, entrepreneurship, and gainful employment for residents. As an employer, HABD offers one of the most competitive benefits packages for employees in Birmingham, including but not limited to up to $5,000 in annual tuition reimbursement for those seeking to continue their higher education.
