✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽In honor of Juneteenth, we remember our ancestors' bravery and sacrifice and celebrate in the hope of a better future.
🤸🏿♂️In Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi's work, "Session," seen here, and "ARENA V" now on view in our lobby, Nkosi extends her study of the social and psychological experiences of Black gymnasts.
In her view, these individuals often grapple with maintaining their personal identities amid public scrutiny as symbols of excellence.
"They focused on my hair. They focused on how big my legs were. But God made me this way, and I feel like if I didn't have these legs or these calves, I wouldn't be able to tumble as high as I can and have all of these moves named after me."—Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history.
❤️💚🖤On #Juneteenth—and all days—may we recognize overcoming bias, #BlackGirlMagic, #BlackBoyJoy, and that #BlackIsBeautiful.
