Students from ʻAiea, Kapolei, Kaʻu, Kealakehe, Kohala, and Pahoa High’s Alternative Learning Programs, which helps at-promise students improve their academic competencies through innovative instructional strategies, showcased their learnings today from their annual summer summit. Students spent a week getting trained in entrepreneurship, leadership, and industry certifications such as First Aid/CPR/AED and OSHA safety to help prepare them for college, career and beyond. #GloballyCompetitiveLocallyCommitted🌎💪🏝️ ❤️

As a newly declared trauma-informed state, the Second Annual Summer Behavior Conference aims to educate 600 guests in sessions such as Restorative Practices, Keys to Self-Determination and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. The Department’s Office of Student Support Services brought together teachers, community partners and parents to learn best practices to help students navigate cognitive and behavioral differences and support them through life emergencies like drug abuse and mental health challenges. The Office of Curriculum Development and Office of Hawaiian Education partnered in the conference to ensure processes and lessons are seeded into daily student life across all schools. 🫶

Amid research and presentation preparations, the HPH Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) scholars’ week continued with a trip to Waipahu High School’s new Academic Health Center (photo 1). Waipahu High School’s health academy students will be able to receive hands-on training by being alongside HPH physicians, nurses and staff in this fully operational primary care clinic which will simultaneously offer active services to the community. One of its facilities includes the Anatomage Table, a 3D virtual dissection table displaying human anatomy and simulations (photo 2). The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education continues its efforts in subsidized county bus passes for grades 9-12 on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, Maui and Kauaʻi, providing transportation options for high schoolers and increasing attendance.
