  • Our Hillcrest Medical Center and Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI) staff and providers recently participated in a healthcare field excursion day with The University of Tulsa Junior Stretched program, which serves underrepresented junior and senior high school students. The day started off with noninvasive cardiologist Dr. Edward Martin giving a talk about sudden cardiac arrest and Nancy Langford, administrative director, demonstrating an automated external defibrillator (AED), followed by lunch at the OHI lecture hall. There was also a panel discussion with four OHI providers and tours of the CV diagnostics, cardiac rehab, cath lab and the heart failure departments. A final talk to finish off the day included Dr. Frank Gaffney, noninvasive cardiologist, who shared his healthcare career journey. Thank you to all our amazing providers and staff members for spending time with these students, and giving them valuable information and experiences. We are so grateful for your time and mentorship!

  • Hillcrest was proud to host a booth during the Juneteenth Black Economic Expo from June 14-16 at the Greenwood Cultural Center. Business relations director Carolina Morris moderated a health panel discussion on Saturday, June 15, which led a group of community professionals through a meaningful discussion about the services Hillcrest offers. She also shared what Hillcrest is doing in the community to help continue to encourage student career exploration in health care. Oklahoma Heart Institute also hosted a booth outside at Guthrie Green during the Juneteenth Wellness Family Fun Day that included yoga on the lawn, dancing and youth activities. We greatly appreciate our volunteers and everyone who visited our booths to celebrate Juneteenth with us!

  • The Advanced Heart Failure Center (AHFC) at Oklahoma Heart Institute celebrated its 25th anniversary this week! Staff enjoyed balloons and cupcakes and reflected on memories from the clinic's past. The AFHC provides comprehensive cardiac care to patients with advanced heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. It was relocated in May 2023 to a new, larger space on the Hillcrest Medical Center campus, just south of the main HMC entrance. This allows us to offer patients care in a state-of-the-art facility. Thank you to our patients for allowing our staff to provide 25 years of advanced heart failure care. To learn about the wide range of services provided by the AHFC, visit https://lnkd.in/dXyeSqF8.

  • “Never in a million years did we imagine he’d end up with a cancer diagnosis.” At 34, Caleb Jenkins, a heavy machine operator, was stunned by a testicular cancer diagnosis after a week of escalating pain. Testicular cancer is rare, with about 20,000 cases annually in the U.S. Caleb underwent surgery on March 8 to remove the affected testicle. “I’d rather go through this at this age than any other age,” Caleb said. His wife Hayley, a pharmacy tech, added, “It was scary, but also a blessing because he’s young and healthy.” Six days after surgery, Caleb was hospitalized again with back pain. Tests by Dr. Jehanzeb Riaz, medical oncologist, revealed the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in his lower back. “Dr. Riaz stayed late into the night just sitting with us, talking to us to get us some answers,” said Caleb. "He always made sure that I was taken care of for both my physical and mental health.” Caleb began chemotherapy on April 15 and completed his last treatment today; he celebrated by ringing the bell at the infusion center. “Our care team at Hillcrest has been fantastic,” said Hayley. “The nurses at the infusion center, Dr. Riaz and his team, have taken amazing care of him. They’ve always made sure he is as comfortable as possible.” Caleb will know if he is cancer-free by the end of July. OU Health's Stephenson Cancer Center is collaborating with Hillcrest to bring the highest level of research-driven care to Tulsa and northeast Oklahoma. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/ggXMNqsq.
