We are entering an era of decline in resources for our younger generations. Wages, food, housing, and vehicle insurance amongst Generation Z (Gen-Z) vs. earlier generations are increasingly becoming disproportionate. These rising costs hinder the ability to meet everyday needs. Learn more about the requirements needed to bolster Gen-Z below!
Generation Z has been disproportionately pummeled by rising prices, higher housing costs, larger student loan balances and more overall debt than the millennials before them. So far, Gen Z workers are more likely to go to college, have jobs and make more money than millennials did. But Gen Z is spending more on housing and car insurance than millennials did. They’re also more likely to be in debt, despite higher wages and more jobs. Read more: https://wapo.st/3RExAw0

Household wages have increased 64% faster than wages since 2010. Meanwhile, wages have only increased by 29% over the same period. The relationship between household income, wages, and the industriousness of Kent County residents is complex and continues to perpetuate significant discrepancies in affordable housing options. While hard work is crucial to securing housing, the gap between earnings and hours worked is affecting Kent County residents' ability to afford housing. Source of income protection bills have passed and are on their way to Governor Gretchen Whitmer! This legislation will ensure families with housing subsidies have increased access to housing units and protect them from discrimination. We’re incredibly proud of the work of our partners and our policy and advocacy team for their ongoing efforts to advance equitable housing. Many thanks to the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness for their persistent and passionate advocacy on this important issue.

This #NationalHomeownershipMonth we highlight stories like Lucas Leverett's. “In the next 10 years, can we continue to afford how we’re living or be able to buy?” This is the question Leverett and his partner ask themselves as they watch the housing market in Kent County change. “Regular folks don’t get a seat at the table to make group decisions,” which impacts many within the community. “To really thrive, you have to have everybody. The vibrancy of the city (of Grand Rapids) is the attraction. It shouldn’t be available only to certain people. It’s not accessible for everyone.” Learn more about lived experiences across the region and how we are advocating for equitable homeownership. #KentCountyHousing #HousingEquity

Racial disparities within the housing sector continue to exclude Black equity. The gap between White and Black homeownership rates has been virtually unchanged since 2017, hovering around 42 points. On days like #Juneteenth and beyond, it is paramount that we continue working toward a more inclusive system for residents not only county-wide but nationally. Get involved with your community by checking out Juneteenth events within your neighborhood today. #EquitableHousing #HousingAffordability

Established by President Bill Clinton on June 2, 1995, #NationalHomeownershipDay is meant to shine a light on making housing more accessible and affordable for all. Our #datadashboard shows that Kent County's entry-level home prices range from $327,011 to as low as around $182,264, and individuals making the median annual income can not keep up with the region's housing prices. Homeownership affordability, rental affordability, and homelessness are the areas we continue to focus on to amplify the ever-increasing need for sustainable homeownership practices.
