About us

Love starts here. With you. Since 1896, the Humane Society of Huron Valley HSHV has been supporting the loving, responsible care animals in our community. We are an award-winning, no-kill shelter -- taking in thousands of unwanted, lost, stray, abandoned, and abused animals -- helping nearly 25,000 animals every year. In addition to pet adoption, we have a full-service low-cost high-quality veterinary clinic that serves the public and puts people and pets over profit, innovative programs that teach children compassio and help strugging seniors and pet owners care for their beloved companion animals, and a rescue and cruelty department that helps educate and advocate, thanks to supporters like you. HSHV is independently run (not associated with the Humane Society of the United States nor Michigan Humane), and we rely on the generosity of people like you to continue our mission. And we are incredibly grateful to our board of directors who volunteer their time and talents to govern us, and to our individual and corporate donors who help continue and expand our work.

  • We've got dogs just walking out the doors... When staff came in the shelter in the morning, Tiki was missing. Security cam footage revealed the sweet senior dog had Houdinied out of his crate, somehow opened the door of the room he was in (we're having to get creative with space because we're SO FULL), then casually walked out the front doors... looking for a home? The great folks at Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum safely returned him ❤️ and we're hoping for a home that appreciates his smarts! 😄 #EmptytheShelters #MVP #AdoptionSpecial - Adult dogs and cats just $50 in July

  • Great information from the wonderful folks who are underwriting our current ADOPTION SPECIAL! (Reminder: Adult animals are either FREE or only $50 to adopt now through the end of July 😍 . Thank you BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell! #EmptyTheShelters

All adopted pets go through an adjustment period after they come home from the shelter. The 3/3/3 rule is a great guideline when setting expectations as your pet settles into their new life with you! Remember to be patient and understanding during this transition period. 💚 💙 #EmptyTheShelters

  • Empty the Shelters is GO!! It's all hands on deck: can you please share to spread the word? Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation, from July 8-31st adoption fees are $50 for adult cats and dogs aged 6+ months -- except for our long-stay animals, who are $0 to adopt! Our shelter is completely full. Florence, pictured here, is living in our office because there is no kennel space. Please tell everyone you know to check out hshv.org/adopt and find their new friend this month! Look for the "Gold Hearts" icon on an animal's profile picture: these animals have been waiting longer than usual and are $0 to adopt. Please know: regardless of the fee, our adoption policies remain the same. Contrary to misconceptions, studies have shown that the waiver of adoption fees does not correlate with irresponsible pet ownership -- but free adoption promotions DO significantly boost adoption rates ❤️

  • 4th of July tips from HSHV's behavior team! With the Fourth of July firework displays quickly approaching, it’s important to have a plan in place for keeping your dogs safe and comfortable. Fireworks can cause stress for our companions because of the bright lights, smoke, and sudden loud sounds. We can avoid the first two stressors by keeping our pets safely indoors during firework displays. We can make loud sounds less stressful by: 🐾 Offering a safe space or comforting area to relax inside 🐾 Playing a radio or television 🐾 Spraying calming scents like lavender and Adaptil 🐾 Giving frozen enrichment items and time-consuming activities 🐾 Using behavior medication. Vets often prescribe Trazodone, an anti-anxiety medication, for dogs who are fearful of loud sounds. 🐾 Staying home and providing your dog comfort with treats and affection or hiring a familiar dog sitter to comfort them. Keep in mind that we want to refrain from punishing a dog for displaying behaviors associated with being fearful. Never attempt to have a dog “face their fears” or purposefully expose them to these conditions. Research your area to see what time firework shows are scheduled. Be sure that windows and doors are secure and avoid taking your dog outside during peak firework times, 8pm-11pm. More pets go missing during the fourth of July weekend than any other time of the year so ensure that your dog is microchipped and wearing an identification tag. If your dog wears a GPS tracker, be sure that the battery is full. Added Note: Firework displays are a long-standing tradition around the world, but they can be stressful and even harmful for domestic animals, wildlife, and people with noise sensitivity issues or PTSD. Firework shows affect the environment by leaving behind trash that can be toxic if consumed and the smoke and loud sounds can disorient wildlife. Consider supporting drone lightshows, laser lightshows, and LED light installations. Try using low-noise fireworks or celebrate with items that don’t make noise such as bubble machines, glow sticks, and sparklers.

  • Pointer the Kitten wants to introduce you to Lauren Thomas, Outpatient Veterinary Assistant here at the Humane Society of Huron Valley. One of our amazing members of our Clinic team, Lauren is a passionate and dedicated animal enthusiast and part of our ongoing work to make an impact in our community and the animals within it. A note about our volunteer, "‘Pointer:" Currently residing in Camp Kitten, apartment 12, along with her crew of siblings, Pointer is an absolute sweetheart who would have been quite happy to snuggle with Lauren for the rest of the day. (Anyone out there with a cat who can relate? 😹) In fact, Pointer along with her brothers and sisters are all eager to meet everyone to find their furever home! If you haven’t been to our new Camp Kitten room yet, there is lots happening in there... Pointer will point it out!
