For #DisabilityPrideMonth, IDHS celebrates Centers for Independent Living (CIL). Aligned with the mission of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on disability—CILs empower Illinois residents with disabilities. Today we feature Access Living in Chicago, a pioneer in the independent-living movement in Illinois. "Our services connect Chicagoans who have all types of disabilities to the tools and resources they need to live the lives they choose in the community,” says Access Living’s President and CEO, Karen Tamley. “Access Living’s advocacy work at the local, state, and national level focuses on eliminating the barriers people with disabilities face in society today.” There are 22 CILs in Illinois—to get in touch with your local CIL, you can visit this website: https://incil.org/locate/

The Quincy Derby, a yearly racing competition for kids, recently made a big splash in the Quincy community. Their Super Kids Derby—dedicated to children with disabilities—was hailed as one of the most impactful and memorable events of the year for the kids who participated. At the awards ceremony, Illinois School for the Visually Impaired’s Ken Mansell explained that the derby made the Super Kids realize “the sky is the limit for them.” This #DisabilityPrideMonth, we celebrate inclusive activities, such as this one, and the teachers and mentors—including our IDHS employees who make events like these happen. https://lnkd.in/eqTCEfdN

Aligned with the mission of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on disability—CILs empower Illinois residents with disabilities. Today, we feature RAMP, with locations in Northern Illinois. “RAMP’s legacy is one of empowerment, inclusion, and lasting impact,” says Jackie Nieman-Sundquist, RAMP’s Chief Executive Officer. “We leave behind a stronger, more inclusive Northwest Illinois, where individuals with disabilities have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive and make their own choices in life.” There are 22 CILs in Illinois.
