On this day in 1913, famous Indiana radio show entertainer Red Skelton was born. Pictured here is Red with a reel-to-reel tape recorder that he used to capture jokes or ideas for his show. Skelton was most known for his radio and television shows between 1937 and 1971.

About us
Since 1830, the Indiana Historical Society has been Indiana’s Storyteller, connecting people to the past by collecting, preserving, interpreting and sharing the state’s history. A private, nonprofit membership organization, IHS maintains the nation’s premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest and presents a unique set of visitor exhibitions called the Indiana Experience. IHS also provides support and assistance to local museums and historical groups, publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; produces and hosts art exhibitions, museum theater and outside performance groups; and provides youth, adult and family programs. IHS is a Smithsonian Affiliate and a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.

Hoosier inventor and popcorn legend Orville Redenbacher was born on this day in 1907 in Brazil, Indiana. Here he is pictured (left) presenting an Angus Heifer to John Coltrain of Darlington in 1946, almost 25 years before he became famous for his popcorn brand which launched in 1970. On this day in 1861, the city of Logansport, Indiana, began receiving their first daily newspaper, the Daily Telegraphic Pharos, which was published only until October 1 of the same year. Pictured here is a photo of Broadway Street in Logansport, ca. 1895. Another of the city’s dailies, The Logansport Journal is advertised on the side of one of the buildings pictured.
