Two Trees Management Co. announced the official reopening of The Refinery at Domino Sugar, one of Brooklyn’s most iconic buildings transformed into a modern workspace. The design of the adaptive reuse project, led by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) began in 2017 with the purpose of reimagining the monument to become a point of connection between the existing neighborhood and the recaptured waterfront. The building now features 15 stories of office space, approximately 460,000 square feet, complete with retail spaces, communal workspaces, a private club, and event spaces. The vertical garden was designed by landscape architecture firm Field Operations, while the interiors of the building were created by interior designer BONETTI KOZERSKI ARCHITECTURE and Executive Architect DENCITYWORKS Bhaskar Srivastava AIA LEED NCARB. The project will become one of New York’s most environmentally responsible buildings. In an increasingly regionalized multipolar world and accelerating global challenges, innovators must embrace new ways of thinking to create a sustainable world across unaligned cultures. In this book extract from their new book, authors suggest that in the face of accelerating global challenges, innovators must embrace “expansive” ways of thinking to create a more sustainable world. Examples around the globe show a rich diversity in technological advancement, which can be channeled by taking “design thinking” further. Some African countries are pioneering the use of drones to deliver humanitarian supplies to far-flung rural areas. In India, the notion of frugal innovation has led to radically more efficient models in health care, such as eye surgery. Japanese firms have paved the way in bringing augmented reality (AR) to computer gaming. China has stolen a march in the application of digital facial-recognition technology. Iran has taken a lead in developing ground-effect vehicles and now uses this technology in its armed forces. Ithaca, New York-based design studio Hannah (Design Studio) designed Cores, a building in Houston a multi-story 3D-printed structure in the United States. The hybrid structure was constructed from 3D-printed concrete combined with wood framing and designed as a multi-story single-family home. The team worked with the American branch of German-based 3D-construction company PERI 3D Construction as well as engineering firm CIVE® to design the home, using a COBOD International BOD2 gantry printer and printable concrete for the construction.  The PERI 3D printing team worked with engineers at Quikrete, a manufacturer of packed concrete, to achieve improved printability for their new generation of printing mixture at the specific site in Houston. Other industry partners include Huntsman Building Solutions / Huntsman Solutions Bâtiments, Carrier, Strongtie, Kohler The development of 3D-printed houses has become more and more common over the last few years. Logan Architecture and construction company ICON completed the first 3D-printed homes for sale in the United States. Hannah was founded by Leslie Lok and Sasa Zivkovic , who teach at Cornell University's Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning school. A 12-meter 3D-printed pedestrian bridge designed by Joris Laarman and built by Dutch robotics company MX3D can be found in Amsterdam. The bridge, which was fabricated from stainless steel rods by six-axis robotic arms equipped with welding gear, spans the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in Amsterdam's Red Light District. Named MX3D Bridge, it was designed by Dutch studio Joris Laarman Lab in collaboration with MX3D, a technology company co-founded by Laarman, and engineering firm Arup. The structure used 4,500 kilograms of stainless steel, which was 3D-printed by robots in a factory over a period of six months before been craned into position over the canal. "This robotic technology finally allows larger optimized designs to be 3D-printed in metal," said MX3D co-founder Gijs Van Der Velden. The technique can lead to more sustainable structures, the team claimed. "The industry is facing a huge challenge in becoming carbon-neutral in 2050," said structural engineer Stijn Joosten. However, architect Philip Oldfield calculated that the stainless steel used in the structure has 27.7 tons of embodied carbon. The The Alan Turing Institute and Arup fitted the structure with a network of sensors that allows the bridge to collect data and build a digital twin to keep track of its performance and health. Although this is believed to be the first 3D-printed stainless steel bridge, bridges have previously been 3D printed from other materials. The Solar Futures House, as it is formally known, was designed by Woodbury University architecture students and constructed out of concrete using the latest 3-D printing technology. It is the first such permitted structure in the city of Los Angeles, according to Woodbury architecture Dean Heather Flood. And it was built by Emergent 3D founded by Donald Ajamian, a 3-D printing construction firm based in Redding. Most notable is how quickly this project came to fruition. “It was 15 months from design, going through the permitting process with the city, working with the printing company and dealing with 14 atmospheric storms,” says Kishani De Silva (MSc Oxon), chair of the construction management program at Woodbury, who served as faculty lead on the project. The Solar Futures House began as an entry in the Solar Decathlon, a national collegiate competition organized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Flood estimates that the budget for the house currently stands at about $250,000, including in-kind support and donated services from area firms. L.A.-based Nous Engineering pitched in on the structural work, while Breen Design Group in Torrance helped with the mechanical systems; Mitsubishi Electric donated an HVAC system and IKEA supplied furnishings. Two dozen students worked on the Solar Futures House over a period of two academic years, rotating in and out of the project as part of their coursework. But a number of them were able to see it through from beginning to end, including Karin Najarian and Jade Royer; Sergio Santos was able to work on the home throughout the entire final year. Interesting paper on a bridge scour risk management approach to deal with uncertain climate future. Riverine bridges are under a substantial threat of scour due to the magnitude and frequency of floods arising due to climate change. Infrequent inspections, inadequate data on foundation depths, and the lack of consideration of hydrologic and climate parameters often result in uncertainties within current scour risk assessments. This paper presents an approach for assessing the risk progression of local scour in peak flow conditions that consider uncertainties associated with location, downscaling of climate predictions, and hydrologic, hydraulic and scour prediction models. A rational scour risk rating based on warning time to failure is introduced that can provide a useful addition to the existing bridge condition indexes. The case study on a set of railway bridges in Southeast England shows that climate change could accelerate the scour risk progression, even in the low-emission scenario. The approach and results form a vital basis for scour risk mitigation and climate adaptation planning.
