🎤 Our Chief Medical Officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN shared his thoughts on the FDA's recent approval of #donanemab on NeurologyLive. Tune in to learn more about what the new Alzheimer's drug means for patients and clinicians and how it's emblematic of a shift in neurology toward becoming more pathology-based.

Thank you Marco Meglio for having me on the NeurologyLive podcast last week! We had a great conversation about the FDA approval of #donanemab (brand name Kisunla) and what it means for patients, clinicians, and the field of neurology more broadly. Here's a synopsis of our discussion: Donanemab has the potential to have a strong positive impact on people living with dementia and their families. In addition to making more treatment options available to patients, the approval of donanemab can further dispel the myth that "nothing can be done" in the case of Alzheimer's disease, which negatively impacts patients' motivation to seek or access care for their symptoms in the first place. Furthermore, the approval of donanemab will motivate people to have conversations earlier – especially when faced with early signs of cognitive changes – which will be advantageous for early detection, early diagnosis, and thus early intervention. As for clinicians, I believe that it's important to be appropriately judicious. Determining which patients are a good fit for these treatments should include a thorough evaluation. Clinicians should also engage in the shared decision-making process with the patient and their loved ones when it comes to creating a person-focused treatment plan. These aren't easy decisions to make, and clinicians not only need to state the facts but also must translate the complexity of what we know (and what we don't know) into a language that patients can understand. Ultimately, it's important to help patients appreciate the benefits as well as the risks so that they can make the best decisions about their care. For the field as a whole, I believe that we're clearly at an inflection point: the treatment of ADRD will increasingly shift towards treatment and management using disease-modifying therapies. Over time, the treatment models will likely begin to parallel what we've seen in oncology and become more pathology based. As a behavioral neurologist, I hope that these exciting developments in neurology will encourage more people to specialize in this field and send a strong signal to pharmaceutical companies to continue investing in and developing new treatments for ADRD. Donanemab has received FDA approval ✔️ Branded as Kisunla™ (pronounced kih-SUHN-lah) by Eli Lilly and Company, donanemab is an amyloid plaque-targeting therapy for persons living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or in the mild dementia stage of Alzheimer’s disease with confirmed amyloid pathology. “This approval offers new hope to patients and families, as donanemab has shown promising results in slowing cognitive decline in early symptomatic stages of Alzheimer’s,” said Dr. Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN, Isaac Health’s Chief Medical Officer. “It is important to note that the treatment is specifically approved for those with confirmed Alzheimer’s pathology and mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia. This ensures that the therapy is targeted to those most likely to benefit.” Donanemab is the second Alzheimer’s drug of its kind to receive FDA approval, with the first such drug being lecanemab (brand name Leqembi – pronounced “leh-KEM-bee”), which was approved last year. 🧠 According to the 2024 Alzheimer's Association® report, dementia currently affects nearly 7 million Americans, with that number expected to double to 14 million by 2060. As healthcare costs for #dementia care are projected to soar to $1 trillion by 2050, unpaid #caregivers are already providing 18.4 billion hours of care annually. These caregivers face significant challenges: 70% are experiencing stress from coordinating care and 2/3 struggle to find necessary resources. Launching today, the CMS' GUIDE Model is designed to mitigate challenges faced by persons living with dementia and their families through comprehensive medical care, support, and resources. As an accepted participant in the GUIDE Model, Isaac Health is thrilled to offer advanced care management for persons living with dementia and their caregivers to address these critical issues, aiming to improve care coordination and health outcomes at a national scale. Key services provided by Isaac Health’s #GUIDE Program include: 🧑⚕️ Advanced community-based care management for dementia: Each GUIDE enrollee will have a dedicated care navigator and a neurology-led community team at Isaac Health, who will help them receive the right care and support. 🫰 Respite care covered by Medicare: Recognizing the need for caregivers to get support while they take care of other tasks, Isaac Health provides #respitecare with trained home care aides. 🫂 Caregiver training and support: Isaac Health’s GUIDE Program will provide essential caregiver training, support groups, and access to a 24/7 helpline to ensure everyone involved in care feels supported. "For me, #dementia has always been very close to my heart. That started from growing up with my grandmother, [who] had an atypical form of dementia. Finding a diagnosis for her took a very long time, which meant that I experienced first-hand how hard it is to navigate [dementia] as a family." Our CEO Julius Bruch, MD PhD spoke with Dennis Kamara on the Decoding Health podcast about why he and co-founder Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN founded Isaac Health. In the podcast, Dr. Bruch talks about: 🧠 How Isaac Health is tackling disparities in dementia care through telehealth 🫂 Why the future of dementia care depends on #caregiver integration 💡 How payers are approaching Alzheimer's and dementia support Listen to the full podcast here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eV5Z4xim
