Driving Healthcare Equity Health equity is not some fancy concept created by some social activist. Health equity is a reality for everyone. It should and would form the basis in all that we do in healthcare, because if we wanted to build a Healthier and Wealthier (Yes! health inequity cost us a lot of money!) community, we cannot neglect the most vulnerable among us. According to a 2016 IHI (Institute of Healthcare Improvement) white paper, if health disparities are not addressed, they would pose an economic burden of $353 billion on the United States by 2050. The mission of CalAIM (@California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal) is to do a 360 transformation of the healthcare business in California by changing the way we care for the most ill and most vulnerable patients so that we ALL (regardless of social economic status, skin-color, gender identity or country of origin) can move collectively towards a healthier and wealthier version of the world we live in . That's Health Equity in action! I was pleased and honored to be in the company of some 200 health equity leaders and champions across California on May 14 to learn, listen and share health equity best practices by health plans and managed care organizations: Mary Watanabe and Nathan Nau walked us through the DMHC health equity measures and standards; Karen Iapoce, RN-C, MSN, CPHQ, CMAC, LSSBB enlightened us on tools and data to improve health equity; Pooja Mittal of Health Net, Les Ybarra of Anthem Blue Cross, Lorena Rodríguez Chandler, MPH of IEHP showcased some of the remarkable initiatives they have implemented in their respective health plans to improve health outcomes of their Medi-Cal patients; Barbara Rubino of Covered California, Traco Matthews, MBA of Kern Health Systems, and Valerie Martinez of Blue Shield of California led a robust discussion of the successes and challenges relating to their health equity efforts. Noah Kaplan of LA Care Health Plan and Loni Hill-Pirtle of Kern Health Systems wrapped up the day by sharing with us their extraordinary work with the justice-involved population. Tangelo is honored to be part of this vision to advance health equity. I left the conference feeling good and confident that Health Equity is not a flavor of the month that will last just for a while.
