Did you catch the TODAY Show segment on caregiving youth?  The story leveraged our signature data, 'Caregiving in the US' (in partnership with AARP) to highlight the staggering number of youth caregivers in America. A whopping 5.4 million kids are providing care for a parent with a chronic illness while juggling school🤯. We know that children facing a parent’s cancer have an increased likelihood of taking on adult roles at home, which often looks like serving as a caregiver during their parent’s cancer treatment. High school junior and Kesem at the University of Southern California camper Rocco, or “Tune,” has been caring for his mother, Danette, for more than 8 years during her cancer journey. We were honored to join the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) and Maria Shriver on the #TODAYShow this week to share his story, and to highlight the critical recognition and resources needed to help the more than 5.4 million #CaregivingYouth like Rocco navigate these experiences. We know that children facing a parent’s cancer have an increased likelihood of taking on adult roles at home, which often includes serving as caregivers during their parent’s treatment. But these children, and the estimated 5.4 million #CaregivingYouth across the United States caring for a sick or disabled parent, are often overlooked and lack appropriate health and educational support. This morning, The Today Show featured the stories of two young people caring for their sick parents. One survey suggests that 16% of high schoolers and one-quarter of middle schoolers are engaged in caregiving in some capacity. The number of child caregivers, most common in Asian, Latino, and Black American families, is increasing as more people find it difficult to afford in-home care, according to experts.
