The new Glendale Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library will officially welcome the public with a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, March 30th! Dedication remarks take place at 10:30AM with an array of exciting activities available at the open house until 4:30PM. Through this project, the Indianapolis Public Library relocates one of the busiest branches in the system, from its previous location in the Glendale Town Center to a new, standalone building embedded within the residential neighborhood. The design respects the scale of the surrounding neighborhood while still giving the presence of an important civic and community building. Our team worked with the library to ensure priorities in stewardship of natural resources as well as energy and material conservation goals were accomplished in the building design. The new library will have easier access for patrons, more daylight and study spaces, and modernization of overall service capability. The branch will also have drive-up material returns, access to public transportation, a community meeting room with a capacity of 100 people, and LEEDv4 Silver Certification. Please join the library in celebrating the new Glendale Branch! More details about the grand opening: https://lnkd.in/gCHEKgcT The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation

We have officially been in our new Indianapolis studio at the Varsity Lofts for a little over a year! The Varsity is an adaptive infill project designed by krM Architecture, that has given new life to a challenging site in the Old Northside Neighborhood of Indianapolis. It was originally a one-story concrete block building, that was home to the Varsity Lounge, a bar that held important social significance in its hey-day, but fell into disrepair after closing its doors. The project challenges the idea that small-scale mixed-use is no longer feasible, maximizing the small site with 4,000 square feet of office space on the ground floor and eight apartments above. The center of the upper floorplates is carved out to form an elevated courtyard, providing each tenant their own front door and direct access to outdoor space. krM's office pulls daylight deep into the space and primarily only uses glass and level changes to create semi-private divisions to foster comradery and collaboration. Simple materials allow the exposed structure and building details to be the highlight of the space, fitting characteristics of a daily space for architects. (for full appreciation of the Varsity project: See the 'before' images in the last photo of this post!)

We are excited to announce that our City of Anderson Transit Station project has received a 2024 Design Excellence Award from the Architectural Institute of America’s Indianapolis Chapter. The project was awarded the highest honor in the category for New Construction - greater than $5M. Thank you AIA Indianapolis! The new Transit Station is the fruition of a nearly decade-long effort of multiple city agencies for a new multi-modal transit hub for local and regional bus routes. The one-story north block of the building serves as the Transit Station, and the southern three-story mass is leasable tenant space. Design of the Transit Station incorporates modern detailing yet integrating into the surrounding context through authentic, durable materials and a focus on the pedestrian experience. High goals for energy efficiency and sustainability were set early on, which ensured they were a focus of the project. The mechanical system uses a geothermal-sourced heat pump system for the heating and cooling needs, relying on 24 vertical underground wells that were carefully coordinated on the crowded site crossed with underground utilities. A solar PV array, located on a portion of the roof, was sized to produce enough energy to account for Transit Station’s entire electrical, thus, the city-occupied portion of the building operates at net zero. The project is LEED Gold certified, a credential given by the U.S. Green Building Council. AIA Indiana City of Anderson

Megan Kubick has been with krM Architecture for five years and has made us a better firm each year! She is one of those gifted individuals that combines all of the skills needed to be a great interior designer. Megan has a good eye for design, a great knowledge of products, and an intense work ethic that elevates an entire project. Her collaborative style of work is an important part of why our interior design and architectural design services are so seamless. While Megan brings her expertise to all project types at krM, she has also been at the forefront of some of our largest recent K-12, Public Library, and Higher Education projects, where she has played a critical role in elevating the educational environment in important spaces across the state.
