    I finally got a chance to listen to Liquid Death's Andy Pearson in an interview with Jaime Cabrera. Link to the episode in the comments. There are so many incredible quotes packed into 60 minutes, but these are the ones that resonated with me the most at this moment. 1. โ€œOur competition is not other brands in the category. Itโ€™s other things that you see in your social feed.โ€ 2. โ€œOn social media, Liquid Death isn't a brand; it's a character. Our brand needs to fit within that world, and itโ€™s made up of real people and interesting stuff. And itโ€™s not made up of brands and doesnโ€™t have these rigid rules." 3. โ€œWe put out so much work continuously, which is how we learn. Not by being super constipated over the strategy of the thing. Brands need to unclench themselves. We are all overthinking it.โ€ 4. โ€œThe brand must be built into the organization from the ground up. Everyone has to be committed to the vision. Itโ€™s not like you can come in and be like now we will make funny videos and crazy products. There is so much groundwork that must be laid for that stuff to work.โ€ 5. โ€œWe are real people making the brand; we arenโ€™t some brand guidelines robotically putting $#!% out in the world. That's what makes it feel organic and human.โ€ 6. โ€œWe should give ourselves creative freedom to make decisions and not have to justify it all the way up the chain of command.     "PowerPoint makes us stupid!" The photo below was from a class I taught at Baruch College. It was my only slide and contained the famous quote from General Mattis. Steve Jobs, the legendary founder of Apple, knew the importance of marketing, and it wasn't PowerPoint (or any slideshow tool). He blocked out Wednesday afternoons to sit with his marketing team to come up with ideas. Jobs wanted meetings to be interactive, and he banned PowerPoint. No presentations were allowed; you had to come up with ideas. Jobs' vision inspired Jack Dorsey to have a similar feeling: "Get out of PowerPoint, and just start building and show it off to people."     In the rapidly evolving marketing world, we've witnessed a significant transformation. Marketing sophistication has advanced, with an apparent tilt towards direct response methods seamlessly blended with digital prowess. We've even coined attractive terms like "growth hacking" and "performance marketing" to describe these cutting-edge strategies. While these tactics are undoubtedly crucial, we mustn't forget that they were once part of a larger, integrated plan, not the solitary focus. This shift is further muddied by a surprising insight: a mere 2.6% of Fortune 1000 board members possess a marketing background. This marketing expertise gap at the top echelons of corporate leadership results in a lack of advocacy for the comprehensive value marketing brings to business. Shockingly, today, only a small fraction of marketing professionals have received formal training in marketing principles, a stark contrast to other professions. Picture a world where less than 30% of engineers had formal training in engineering or where 30% of lawyers had no legal training. Yet, it appears that corporations have deemed it perfectly acceptable to entrust their marketing to individualsโ€”and leadersโ€”who lack formal training.     In my latest letter, we look at The Wanamaker Paradox and how marketing has lost its way.
