In brand protection, there's no single solution, or no "silver bullet" as Bill Patterson of Octane5 International wisely remarked during our recent webinar. The key is using the right data from the best sources to find the right clues that lead to an actionable investigation. To make this work, brands must adopt a multi-faceted approach. Relying on a single source or type of data won’t always unlock clues of the source of counterfeiting. The key is to integrate both online and offline information. In the case of Bill’s client, offline data from serial numbers of physical packaging raised the alarm of counterfeiting. This allowed them to use the data available from online sources to track the leak and start an investigation. By embracing this synergistic approach, brands can not only respond to counterfeiting more effectively but also anticipate and prevent future threats. -- Want to learn more about combining offline and online data? Has protecting your brand online ever felt like a repetitive, endless chore? As Airina Rodrigues puts it, it can feel like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill each day. So, what's the bigger action? How do you leave a real, lasting impact against counterfeiters? The best way to tackle this issue comprehensively is to take your efforts from online to offline. It starts with leveraging the information gathered from online sources like online marketplaces, social media, impersonating websites, bank information, and more. With this in hand, you can take decisive action in the real world. This means going beyond just removing listings. It means freezing assets. Raiding manufacturing spots. Even putting real criminals behind bars. The online-to-offline approach ensures that the fight against counterfeiting is genuinely impactful. It disrupts the entire counterfeit supply chain, from production to distribution, and holds perpetrators accountable. Brands that adopt this strategy can better protect their intellectual property, maintain their market integrity, and safeguard their customers. When you’re starting out in brand protection, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data available. During our recent webinar, Bill Patterson of Octane5 International summed up the challenge perfectly: “Getting the data is easy. Making it actionable is what's difficult." The challenge isn’t about collecting data - it’s about analyzing and using it in a way that allows for actionable intelligence. So, how do you make data actionable? 1- Prioritize quality over quantity. Focus on collecting quality, relevant data that directly impacts your brand protection efforts. 2- Using advanced analysis. There are tools available to brands that can analyze data, no matter the volume, to extract real insights on counterfeiting activities online to inform decision making. 3- Integration with offline investigation. Combining data from online and offline sources creates a cohesive and actionable conclusion that can help identify the highest-risk counterfeiters out there. Don’t let data be just another hurdle. Turn it into your most powerful asset in the fight against counterfeiting. -- Want to learn more about combining offline and online data? Brick-and-mortar giants are expanding online with third-party marketplaces. Many shoppers don't realize these platforms often host products not directly sold by the retailers. This assumption of retailer oversight leads to a dangerous vulnerability: counterfeit goods slipping through the cracks. Customers trust stores like Walmart, Kroger, Macy’s, K-Mart, and Bed Bath & Beyond based on years of positive in-store experiences. But counterfeiters exploit this trust, sneaking fake products into the platforms. Unlike on Amazon or AliExpress, where shoppers might be more cautious, these familiar names create a false sense of security. As trusted stores open their doors to third-party sellers, robust vetting processes become crucial. Until this vetting is completely trustworthy, brands themselves need to stay vigilant on these new marketplaces. Counterfeit products are famously dangerous. But, the harm doesn't stop at the consumer. The production of counterfeit goods frequently is unethical through and through, including child labor and other exploitative practises. Vulnerable populations are exploited to create these fake items at minimal costs. Each fake product represents a chain of exploitation and danger that stretches from the factory floor to the end-user. For cosmetics brands like Tarte Cosmetics, the risks are particularly high. Unsanitary manufacturing conditions and harmful ingredients can lead to severe health consequences. But this issue isn't limited to cosmetics—it's prevalent in all counterfeit products. Brands committed to ethical standards must take a stand. It's not just about protecting your revenue; it's about safeguarding your customers, upholding human rights, and standing for what's right. The fight against counterfeiting is a fight for ethical responsibility and consumer safety. MarqVision Selected in This Year's IVP Enterprise AI 55! We are honored to be named alongside companies like Superhuman, Brex, and Perplexity in the 2024 cohort of leading AI startups in the IVP Enterprise AI 55 list! 🎉 A special shoutout to our incredible customers whose success stories inspire us every day. Here's what the General Counsel at a ~$1Bn annual revenue e-commerce brand had to say about our platform: "Previously, my team could only achieve a fraction of this, as it’s cumbersome to scroll through individual listings across different ecommerce marketplaces. This platform saved us the equivalent of hiring 5-7 new FTEs, no brainer, while also increasing the effectiveness of our team.” Thank you to IVP for recognizing our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that drive efficiency and success for your businesses everywhere. 🚀
