MVA Litigation Members Jim McLoughlin and Fielding Huseth co-author the Law360 article, “Challenging Prosecutors' Use Of Defendants' Jail Phone Calls” which was published on July 17. The article Pretrial detention imposes severe burdens on a defendant's ability to prepare for trial. One such burden is that the prosecution may receive, without a warrant, recordings of the defendant's electronic communications, especially telephone calls, that the jail recorded. Jim and Fielding offer a challenge strategy and perspective of the Constitutional and statutory issues. The article is based on their in-depth treatment of the subject in Challenging Prosecutorial Use of a Pretrial Detainee’s Electronic Communications, Jim Mcloughlin, Fielding Huseth, and Catherine Prater, University of Southern California Review of Law & Social Justice (Volume 33, Issue 1), March 2024 https://lnkd.in/ehFFZ5mn

Palvia co-founded SABA North Carolina and will serve as the group’s first President. Having a SABA Chapter in North Carolina “expands our sense of community not just in our personal lives, but also in our professional lives,” Palvia says. SABA North Carolina is an inclusive non-profit organization focused on establishing and fostering a professional community for South Asian legal professionals across North Carolina and has both in-person events in Charlotte and the Triangle and virtual events to help reach members across the state. Anup Iyer, MVA Intellectual Property Senior Counsel, will serve on the Board for the South Asian Bar Association of North America North Carolina Chapter. Palvia says he has been instrumental in his efforts to help launch the Chapter. https://lnkd.in/e3XtS5d2
