Consider this your sign to get on the train and visit #MCNY before "This Is New York!" closes tomorrow! Included in the works on view is this drawing by Charles Addams. Addams, who developed the series of extremely quirky characters who eventually became known as the Addams Family, delighted in depicting New York as a weird juxtaposition of the mundane and the macabre. 📷 : Charles Addams. • "If convenient and weather permits we would like to see you on Thursday, the 29th..." reads the opening of the message on this postcard. How polite! We wonder if they linked up on the Brooklyn Bridge on the 29th and if so, what did they talk about? While you're making your plans for the weekend, dear followers, if convenient and weather permits, we would like to see you at the Museum 🧐 ! We're open Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 📸 J. Koehler (Firm). Postcard, ca. 1904. H: 3 1/2 in, W: 5 1/2 in. Museum of the City of New York Collection. X2011.34.4159

“This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture" fills the top floor of the block-long, Georgian-style building with artifacts and interactive exhibits that celebrate the vitality of the crowd, the pleasures and challenges of urban living, and the countless citywide gathering spaces where strangers converge." — The Boston Globe on our centennial exhibition, which closes at #MCNY on July 21. “This Is New York” features both famous and lesser-known depictions of New York in film and television, visual and performing art, music, poetry, literature, and fashion, painting a collective, moving, and sometimes funny version of a city that has captured the imagination of the world. 📸: Máximo Colón. Last month, we hosted our annual Cities & Sports Business Luncheon at Cipriani 42nd Street, raising over $1.3 million for the Museum of the City of New York. Over 400 guests from the worlds of sports, media, culture, and business joined us for an engaging discussion on how sports can drive economic development for cities. Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, Ronay Menschel Director and President of the Museum, highlighted the Museum’s unique opportunity to showcase how sports drive economic growth and foster social connections. NYC’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, Maria Torres-Springer, emphasized the significant impact of sports venues like Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden on the city’s vitality. The event featured a dynamic panel discussion moderated by James G. Dinan, Co-Owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. Panelists included David Blitzer (Co-Owner, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Guardians, Crystal Palace Premier League, Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals), Jon Ledecky (Co-Owner, NY Islanders), Stephen M. Ross (Chairman, Related Companies; Owner, Miami Dolphins), Chris Stadler (Managing Partner, CVC Capital), and Clara Wu Tsai (Governor, New York Liberty; Owner, Brooklyn Nets; Vice Chair, BSE). They shared their insights on the pivotal role of sports in urban growth and community development. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our mission. 🌈 Friday, June 28th marked the anniversary of the #Stonewall Uprising in 1969 when LGBTQ+ patrons of the Stonewall Inn Bar and their allies in Greenwich Village fought back against a police raid. Activists commemorated the anniversary of the events at Stonewall one year later with Christopher Street Liberation Day, which sparked the beginning of annual #pride marches in New York and around the world. For the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in 1994, nearly one million people marched in the annual parade, demanding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights be extended to LGBTQ+ people. That year, the Museum of the City of New York recognized the landmark anniversary with the photography exhibition “PRIDE = POWER!.” 📷: Gay Men's Health Crisis. [Get It - Stonewall 25]. Don't miss "This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture," which is on view through July 21. An interactive and sweeping exhibition examining what NYC has meant to people, "This is New York" focuses on artists, writers, and other creators who have been inspired by the city. One section, Tempo of the City, borrows its title from an iconic street scene photographed by Berenice Abbott. Abbott's photographs are still amongst the most popular images of the city to this day. She was most interested in the changing look and feel of the city, the intersection of old and new, of the juxtaposition of tenements and skyscrapers. The scene featured here was made in the spring of 1938 and captures lunch hour on Broadway and 44th in the relatively newly created business district of Midtown. The cast iron clock, installed in 1907, hearkens back to an earlier age before the popularization of wristwatches. 📸: Berenice Abbott. Tempo of the City I. 1938. Museum of the City of New York.
