Take a look at our #EyeOnTheFuture Recognition Event Q&A panel discussion, which features a diverse group of scientists and researchers sharing about their careers and lives in science. Our #EyeOnTheFuture teen participants had the chance to ask questions and gain valuable knowledge from scientists working on vision research!

New research findings on age-related #MacularDegeneration (AMD): Researchers at the University Hospital Bonn (Germany) identified early changes in people with AMD that can be used to measure future loss of vision. Tracking early signs of retinal damage could help doctors monitor the progression of AMD and treat the disease at an earlier stage. Read more from BMJ Open Ophthalmology: https://lnkd.in/e885XfMJ

Scientists in our Intramural Program have uncovered a brain circuit that rapidly detects faces. Findings could shed light on how our own brains develop facial recognition, interpret complex facial expressions, and build social interaction skills. Differences in this newly identified brain circuit could play a role in #autism and related conditions. Read more from Neuron: https://lnkd.in/eXVJcjTr

Why do some people experience long-term eye pain after refractive surgeries like LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis)? Proteins found in tears may play a role, according to researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. They identified protein levels that shifted in people who reported eye pain months after surgery. These protein patterns could one day help doctors evaluate patients’ risk of post-surgical pain.
