Take a peek inside the Neural Crest Development & Disease Unit at NIDCR. Lab chief Dr. Laura Kerosuo and dentist-scientist Dr. Shaun Abrams discuss their work studying a group of stem cells in the early embryo called neural crest cells, which are critical for development of the face and skull. A better understanding of neural crest development could help scientists design treatments for birth defects that affect the head and face. A former #postdoc in Dr. Kerosuo’s lab, Dr. Abrams recently started his own lab at NIDCR as an NIH Independent Research Scholar. https://lnkd.in/evMZpDf7

Happening this month! On July 17-18, join NHGRI for a virtual symposium that will explore the many dimensions of sex and gender in the genomics era. This event will bring together top experts from biological and social sciences to help clarify and provide context for the many dimensions of sex and their relationships with gender. These discussions are crucial for providing a stronger scientific framework for understanding sex better for the benefit of all populations. Learn more and register here! https://lnkd.in/eZCWsK3J

Pain really is in your head. NIDCR lab chief Dr. Mark Hoon and #PhdStudent Yizhen Zhang describe their work to understand how the brain modifies our perception of pain under different circumstances. What they learn could help scientists find safer alternatives to opioids for treating pain. https://lnkd.in/dufYxiPm #STEM #ResearchTraining

National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)-funded researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine report in JAMA Network Open that dental visits increase among children on Medicaid when pediatric clinicians provide oral health screenings during wellness visits. These interventions could help reduce oral health disparities. https://go.nih.gov/UjEO3LY

Why is age a risk factor for Sjögren’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes dry eyes & mouth? An NIDCR-supported study Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation found that an aging-related immune cell infiltrates & drives inflammation in salivary glands of older mice. The findings may help scientists better address age-related factors in autoimmune disorders. https://lnkd.in/gs8_tzbP

The NIH HEAL Initiative® released a 🆕 Request for Information (RFI) on how scientific research can continue to address the urgent public health need to improve pain management. Pain affects 50 million adults in the United States. The lack of safe and effective pain management for many different pain conditions is an urgent public health need. Your feedback will help inform HEAL research! Email HEALquestion@od.nih.gov with “HEAL RFI” in the subject line by July 31, 2024. Learn more: go.nih.gov/mcoqY3J
