    Listening is an invaluable skill...

When you speak in such a way that others love listening to you and listen in such a way that others love talking to you, it shows you value your team by actively listening to their concerns, feedback or suggestions. I often wonder why companies ask their employees for feedback when, repeatedly, they never listen to what their employees are saying. When you take the time to listen to someone, really take the time to listen; it shows you value the person. Listening is a core aspect of leadership; many people in leadership positions don't listen. They may be hearing, but they don't really listen. To become an effective leader, close your mouth sometimes and truly listen to your team because great leaders recognize that knowledge and wisdom are not gained by talking but by listening. Inspire your team with our Amazon bestseller, “Unlock the Hidden Leader: Become The Leader You Were Destined To Be.” This book has already transformed countless leaders; now it’s your turn. True leadership and management cannot be built on fear. While it may produce short-term results, the quality of work will only be average and not sustainable in the long run. It is baffling that some individuals in leadership positions believe fear is the best method to motivate their team. I often wonder why some organizations still resort to fear-based strategies despite overwhelming evidence that they don't lead to a healthy work environment. In fact, such systems foster a toxic culture that saps inspiration and motivation from their teams, preventing them from performing at their best. Please don't settle for an organization that operates on fear; it's not good for your professional growth, health, or energy. There are many options out there; take advantage of them because you deserve better. Thanks Jim. Tulsa, Oklahoma - let's never forget...

View profile for James H. Lowry, graphic

Senior Advisor at The Boston Consulting Group

I had the opportunity to contribute to @CNBC’s article highlighting the transformative journey of Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the horrific events of the Black Wall Street Massacre, Tulsa's perseverance, creativity, and innovation gave way to its resurgence as a hub for entrepreneurship.   Historically, entrepreneurship has been seen as a risky career pursuit for the Black community, largely due to a disproportionate number of successful role models to look up to. Tulsa is looking to change this by fostering a supportive environment for growth by local leaders and the business community at large.   However, Tulsa is not the only city where Black entrepreneurship is flourishing. In cities across the nation - led by Black business leaders like Robert Greene at NAIC, Margaret Anadu, Cedric Nash, Robert Smith, and John Rogers - Black businesses are being created at historic rates having a positive impact on communities and the US free enterprise system.   I look forward to seeing the future impact of this exciting initiative. Anytime we are mentioned in the same reference as George and Carlos, we consider it an honor and a privilege. Thank you both for your leadership and support.

In recognition of Black History Month, The Partnership is highlighting Black leadership in other not for profit organizations throughout Chicago and Cook County. It is a pleasure to introduce the following leaders: George Wright is the CEO of The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership. He served as the co-chair of The Partnership’s Board of Directors for eight years and in 2023 stepped into the role of CEO., Wright came to the position after a distinguished career in banking and community investment. In 2024, he retired as director of community relations for Citibank’s Global Consumer Group. As Director of Community Relations, Wright led all aspects of Citi’s community development portfolio in Illinois and across the Central Region. Rodney Brown, Executive Director and CEO of New Covenant Community Development Corporation, is an established, globally minded, yet locally focused, change agent. He has facilitated the educational success of young adults as a board member of multiple NPOs and as Co-Director of the Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) division of the Joseph Business School. Carlos Nelson, CEO of Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation. Carlos is a long-time stakeholder in the Auburn Gresham community and was an important partner when The Partnership opened its Education and Workforce Center in Chatham. He began volunteering for the newly formed not-for-profit organization and accepted the position of Executive Director in January, 2003, leaving corporate America behind to pursue a life of service.

In the heart of North Lawndale, amidst the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood streets, Dave's Red Hots has long been a beloved fixture—a place where locals and visitors alike gather to savor the flavors of Chicago's iconic cuisine. Founded by the charismatic Dave Johnson in the 1950s, Dave's Red Hots quickly became synonymous with mouthwatering hot dogs, juicy burgers, and crispy fries. Generations of North Lawndale residents grew up with the comforting taste of Dave's signature creations, each bite a delicious reminder of cherished memories and shared moments. As the years passed and the neighborhood evolved, Dave's Red Hots remained a steadfast presence—a testament to the enduring power of tradition and community. When Dave eventually retired, the torch was passed to Shirley Fountain, a longtime employee who had worked alongside him for decades. Under Shirley's dedicated stewardship, Dave's Red Hots continued to thrive, serving up the same delicious fare that had made it a local institution. But Shirley's true legacy lies not just in preserving the traditions of the past, but in embracing the future and ensuring that Dave's Red Hots remains a vital part of the North Lawndale community for generations to come. Today, Shirley's daughter, Eugenia "Gina" Fountain, has taken on an increasingly prominent role in running the family business. With her innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit, Gina is helping to modernize Dave's Red Hots while staying true to its roots. From introducing new menu items to expanding the restaurant's online presence, Gina is ensuring that Dave's Red Hots remains relevant in an ever-changing world. But amidst all the changes, one thing remains constant—the warm welcome and friendly service that have been the hallmarks of Dave's Red Hots since the very beginning. As North Lawndale continues to evolve, Dave's Red Hots stands as a beacon of stability and comfort—a place where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy great food and even better company. With Shirley and Gina Fountain at the helm, the future of Dave's Red Hots looks brighter than ever, promising to uphold the legacy of excellence that has made it a beloved institution for over half a century.
