We can’t believe that our Summer Honors Interns have been with us for a little over half of our 9-week summer program! During this time, and for the rest of the summer, 28 1L and 2L law students from law schools across the country have been, and will continue to be, immersed in substantive work in many of our litigating divisions. In addition to the assignments the Summer Honors Interns have been receiving and being integrated into our office, they have participated in the following events: - Serving at a community service event, preparing meals for New York City residents with terminal illness and their families and/or caregivers. - Being guests of honor at their Welcome Reception. - Going on a boat tour, where Deputy Division Chief Chris Reo and Senior Counsel Devon Goodrich of our Environmental Law Division educated us about the many of the projects and initiatives around New York City in which the Law Department was/is involved. - Going on a tour of Governors Island led by Dan Hantman, the Trust for Governors Island’s General Counsel, and by Law Department alum J. Louis Coppersmith, the Trust for Governors Island’s Counsel, who shared about some of the amazing legal work they do on behalf of the Trust as well as upcoming projects on the Island. We’re so excited to have them with us for the next few weeks, during which they will participate as witnesses in our Trial Advocacy program for our first-year attorneys!
About us
Every day the New York City Law Department's approximately 850 lawyers and 750 support professionals work collaboratively to pursue justice while providing the City with the highest quality legal representation. The Law Department represents the City, the Mayor, other elected officials, and the City's many agencies in all affirmative and defensive civil litigation, as well as juvenile delinquency proceedings brought in Family Court and Administrative Code enforcement proceedings brought in Criminal Court. Law Department attorneys draft and review local and State legislation, real estate leases, procurement contracts, and financial instruments for the sale of municipal bonds. The Law Department also provides legal counsel to City officials on a wide range of issues such as immigration, education, and environmental policy. There is rarely a major City initiative that is not molded by the Law Department's staff. The Law Department is led by the Corporation Counsel who is nominated by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by the City Council. The office values a supportive work environment where dedicated public servants help each other develop the necessary skills to tackle complex legal issues. The office firmly believes that the diversity of its employees is its greatest strength. Many employees spend their career at the Law Department because they value the respect that their coworkers have for one another and the high standard of integrity and professionalism that their colleagues exercise. The Law Department is comprised of 17 legal divisions and 3 support divisions. It is staffed with 690 lawyers and 850 support professionals in 10 offices located in all five boroughs, as well as in Kingston, N.Y. The Law Department is led by the Corporation Counsel who is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Mayor. We invite you to learn more about the Law Department by exploring nyc.gov/law.

To commemorate LGBTQ+ month last month, the New York City Law Department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee collaborated with the Caribbean American Lawyers Association (CALA), the Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA), and the Kings County Criminal Court, to participate in the Brooklyn Pride Walk. It was also wonderful to host Law Department alum Seth Eichenholtz, Associate Deputy Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice, who spoke to us about his journey as an attorney and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Thank you, Seth, for joining us, and thank you to all who attended the events!

Though we are well into June, we nevertheless wanted to highlight that for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in May, the New York City Law Department's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee commemorated the theme of “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation” by welcoming back Law Department alum Ryan Budhu to speak about his life, his career, and his journey as an attorney being a member of the AANHPI community. It was an engaging and inspiring conversation. Thank you, Ryan, for coming back and sharing your insight with us!
