Buy / Build / Modify: Desperate, Insane, Overachievers As we approach the The CMX (Hive) conference, I was asked to define the profiles of those who buy, build, and modify solutions in our industry. This question is particularly relevant for our upcoming roundtables, which will cover the same topic. Reflecting on our diverse projects and clients—some successful, others less so—helped me understand who chooses each type of vendor solution and why. Buy: The Desperate Making any change in FinTech is daunting. It’s expensive, impactful, and risky, typically indicating that something internally is severely broken. Our industry often promotes the concept of “good enough,” so unless a system is truly failing, people tend to stick with what they have. Pure buyers are desperate; they face problems they cannot fix without significant changes. Build: The Insane This is the realm of the truly ambitious, or perhaps the foolhardy. These firms believe that starting from scratch with a small team will yield a market-leading product. It’s akin to building your own car instead of buying one. While creating and maintaining a trading platform critical to your business might seem like a good idea, it pales in comparison to mature products developed by hundreds of developers over years of testing. Today’s builders often become tomorrow’s panic buyers. Modify: The Overachievers This is the sweet spot. These firms purchase foundational technology and then reinvest their profits into customizing and enhancing it to meet their specific needs. They differentiate with their intellectual property while benefiting from the stability and shared innovation of established solutions. These are the innovators and thought leaders—the ones who pop the hood to showcase their finely tuned, customized engines. So, who are you?

Our partners at Overbond are leading the charge in optimizing and automating corporate bond trading. OPCO Advisory Glenn Lesko
The TRADE News highlights US corporate bond trading automation pegged as key technology priority for 2024. Trading volumes for US corporate bonds up 34% year-on-year, the only way to meet demand is to price and quote bonds faster than a human and become increasingly efficient in their client liquidity provisions. Automation demand is increasing as it allows traders to spend more time on areas that are more manual while still maintaining the same level of service. Overbond provides data aggregation solutions and a comprehensive suite of AI algorithms for bond pricing, trade workflow automation, pre-trade signals and market surveillance. Overbond’s EMS API interoperability allows traders to work the order using a variety of suitable automation protocols and order types, including: smart order routing (SOR), auto-RFQ, and one-touch adjustment. Overbond’s execution management system interoperability is an application that aggregates, hosts, and displays real-time market and reference data. Overbond EMS interoperability allows traders fast, seamless execution workflow with any counterparty or venue on the street.
