Last month we celebrated a significant construction milestone with our academic partner, the University of Oklahoma, Norman Regional Health System and Manhattan Construction Company. This facility is set to open in the summer of 2025, and patients like Karalisa Duncan are already benefiting from the partnership between OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center and Norman Regional that began in January of 2023. The new space will double capacity for infusion services, ensuring timely and efficient patient care, and it will house dedicated spaces for research coordinators and nurses to engage with patients about clinical trials, assessing eligibility and offering innovative treatment options. Join us in celebrating the expansion of research-driven, multidisciplinary, patient-centered cancer care.

Launched by Oklahoma Football Head Coach Brent Venables, the S.O.U.L. (Serving Our Uncommon Legacy) Mission provides layers of support and development for football student-athletes off the field. As part of this initiative, student-athletes have a week-long paid micro-internship opportunity to explore various industries, including business, education, and healthcare. Through partnerships with programs like OU SOUL, OU Health aims to create career pathways for future healthcare leaders from non-traditional backgrounds, ensuring a pipeline of future leaders in healthcare. As the employer of choice for top talent, OU Health is providing real-world healthcare insights and skill development targeting non-traditional student populations. During the micro-internship, student-athletes shadowed nurses and learned from Air Kids One transport crews. They toured operating rooms with the Level I trauma team and met top executives to gain insights into different healthcare professions that support patients. Throughout the week, participants witnessed firsthand the impact of our academic healthcare system on the community. Our focus on education, clinical care, and research sets us apart, and they even joined our employees for a block party celebrating OU Health Week.

Experts at OU Health completed the state’s first liver transplant for a particularly challenging and oftentimes deadly form of a bile duct cancer known as cholangiocarcinoma. This achievement not only places OU Health among the few elite programs in the country that treat bile duct cancers with transplantation but also brings immense relief to Oklahomans who no longer must leave the state to receive this life-saving treatment. Before this first transplant at OU Health, patients traveled to centers several hundred miles away for a transplant to address hilar cholangiocarcinoma.
