"How many of the people implementing a USAID-funded project in-country should actually be from that country?" Palladium co-CEO Ricardo Michel MBA, CPA recently returned from a visit to Palladium's offices in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Kenya, with a renewed pride and appreciation for our approach to localization. With the recent release of USAID's Localization Progress Report for 2023, he's more certain than ever of the role we have to play. Exciting news from Palladium's Regeneration! We are thrilled to announce the launch of Rebuild's Technical Assistance Facility, designed to help cocoa and coffee businesses comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). When the new rules come into effect in December 2024, companies trading in cocoa, coffee, cattle, oil palm, rubber, soya and wood will have to conduct extensive due diligence on their value chains to ensure the goods don't cause deforestation, forest degradation, or breach local environmental and social laws. For many small businesses, meeting these regulations will be difficult. But they're necessary, and our new facility will support businesses working in cocoa and coffee in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda to meet the new requirements. Applications are now being accepted from businesses looking for traceability, regulation, and data management support to meet EUDR requirements! Farmers in Indonesia are aging. This means the prevalence of disabilities, especially those related to mobility and sensory functions, is increasing. Routine tasks for farmers, such as gathering green fodder to feed their dairy cows in a backyard pen or reading the label on the back of a fertiliser bottle at their local agri-kiosks are becoming more difficult. In May, PRISMA, a partnership between the Indonesian and the Australian Government, hosted an event to give agribusinesses an opportunity to learn from farmers with disabilities and share best practices for reaching farmers with a disability with products, services, and innovations that can increase their incomes. Last week, our Australian colleagues marked NAIDOC Week to recognise, celebrate, and learn about the history, culture and achievements of Australia’s First Nations peoples. Our team in Vanuatu took the opportunity to reflect on what this means for international development, writing for the Development Policy Centre about the impact of Indigenous foreign policy commitments on the justice sector. The goal is to "work through the lens of culture and connect in a spirit of genuine partnership and respect with our colleagues, partners, and communities," says Alice McGrath, who works on Palladium's Vanuatu-Australia Policing and Justice Program. "That such a storm has developed so early in the season shows that we are facing a climate emergency and must act now." Last week, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced a support package for the Caribbean in the wake of Hurricane Beryl. The UK Government’s response to the humanitarian need in the Caribbean is supported by HSOT – the Humanitarian and Stabilisation Operations Team, funded by the UK and managed by Palladium. Emergency shelter kits to support up to 4,000 people have been dispatched to Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines. These, along with 1,620 buckets for households to collect and store water, have been sent from supplies pre-positioned in the region as part of the UK's preparedness plans.
