Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging is a policy approach that holds manufacturers more responsible for the packaging they use and its lifecycle. The purpose is to promote the use of less and easily recyclable materials and ensure that those materials are recycled after use. To date, six states have passed EPR packaging bills: California, Colorado, Oregon, Maine, Minnesota, and Maryland. Most packaging EPR programs require manufacturers to join a collective producer responsibility organization and comply with set standards for packaging in a given state. As more states look to adopt laws that increase producer responsibility for packaging, it is critical for your business to understand the evolving requirements and ensure compliance.
