The University of Illinois Foundation (UIF) recently held a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new headquarters, the University of Illinois Philanthropy Center. Designed by Perkins Eastman, and built by Berglund Construction, the new 60,000 sf Philanthropy Center is LEED Gold-certified and is targeting WELL Platinum certification. “It has been a pleasure to work with UIF to develop a transformative vision for the future of the Foundation. This building provides tailored spaces that incorporate the latest in workplace and healthy, sustainable design,” says Jerry R Walleck, principal-in-charge of the project. Can a new school or major renovation actually improve student and teacher performance—and strengthen the community that surrounds it? A new multi-year study by Perkins Eastman and Drexel University suggests exactly that, writes Jennifer Sergent, LEED Green Associate in “Proof Positive” for our annual magazine, #TheNarrative. The story details how the firm’s K-12 Education practice, along with Drexel University's School of Education Professor Bruce A. Levine, produced findings that will inform school districts’ approach to facility improvements—and the budget requests to finance them. The study, “Addressing a Multi-Billion Dollar Challenge,” was sponsored by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows #LatrobePrize and J+J Flooring. Perkins Eastman’s #FuturesCouncil met in our #NewYork studio last week for two days of leadership training and to share much valued face-to-face time together. “We gathered a great group of our talented professionals from across the firm for two intense days of leadership training and coaching led by Cathy Mobley from FMG Leading. This kicks off the Futures Council’s work. It’s always impressive to see the depth of talent and experience we have throughout the firm. Cathy made a point of saying how engaged the group was, and the positive energy they brought to the sessions,” says Nick Leahy, AIA, LEED AP, co-CEO and executive director, who co-leads the Futures Council with Jeff Young, AIA, principal and executive director. “The connections this group will make, and the professional relationships that are formed over the next year, will be profound. This will be of huge benefit to the entire enterprise, not to mention the individual council members, in innumerable ways. I can’t wait to see how they gel together and collectively provide fresh insights for the betterment of the firm,” Young adds. #PerkinsEastman #HumanByDesign #FuturesCouncil #ThoughtLeadership #DesignLeadership #Design #Architecture #NYC

In a new Insights post, Mwanzaa Brown writes about the recent panel discussion he moderated in our New York studio, where three co-authors of the book Out in Architecture gathered to offer their perspectives on being queer in the AEC industry, and the importance of bringing your whole self to work—however you identify—so that you can perform at your best. Green Building and Design speaks with Heather Jauregui, associate principal and director of sustainability at Perkins Eastman, about the importance of balancing the focus on high-performance systems, low embodied carbon, and other #sustainabledesign strategies with the well-being and health of the people inside the buildings. “Now more than ever, as we continue to weather and learn from conjoined public health, economic, social justice, and environmental crises, it has become increasingly apparent that we need to acknowledge the interrelationships between the wellness of people and the wellness of our planet,” she says. “Each of these has been influenced by the others, and the impact of climate change on all these crises cannot be overlooked. We cannot tackle these crises individually. We need to address all of them.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/e_yaHXkN #PerkinsEastman #HumanByDesign #Sustainability #IAQ #Wellness #Design

We’re thrilled to announce that two of our projects won national awards at #AIA24, the annual The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture & Design. During the AIA Awards gala last Friday, June 7, Bard High School Early College DC, an innovative early college program designed by Perkins Eastman DC in collaboration with DC Department of General Services, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), MCN Build, CMTA, Inc., and community stakeholders, received a 2024 AIA Education Facility Design Award. “It’s so impressive to have a net zero school (targeted) in an urban center renovation,” commented the AIA jurors. “It’s clear the team went to great lengths to involve the students and the community so they would all feel connected.” In addition, The Wharf, a visionary waterfront neighborhood in Southwest DC, was celebrated with a 2024 AIA Regional & Urban Design Award, which recognizes the best in urban design, regional and city planning, and community development. Perkins Eastman was the architect and master planner of the vibrant waterfront district, and worked in collaboration with Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (Hoffman & Associates) to transform a former underutilized part of the city into the critically-acclaimed urban destination it is today. #PerkinsEastmanDC #PerkinsEastman #HumanByDesign #AIAAwards #DesignAward #EducationDesign #UrbanDesign #DCDesign #Design #Architecture Ronnie McGhee, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP Dan Curry
