About us

Postpartum Support International (PSI) was founded in 1987 by Jane Honikman. The purpose of the organization is to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that individuals and families experience during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. PSI has members all over the world, including volunteer coordinators in every one of the United States and in 50+ countries. PSI disseminates information and resources through its volunteer coordinators, website, DVD, and annual conference. Its goal is to provide current information, resources, education, and to advocate for further research and legislation to support perinatal mental health.

  • “For most women, giving birth is imagined as a magical experience. You’re told that it will be the happiest moment of your life. But what happens when it’s not?” — Emily Guarnotta, PsyD, PMH-C “The truth is that nearly one-third of women have a traumatic birth. A traumatic birth is any birth experience that is very scary or overwhelming. Women who have unexpected medical procedures during birth, complications, or who have a baby who was injured or required medical attention are more likely to report that their birth was traumatic.” “A portion of women who experience a traumatic birth go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is a mental health condition that involves changes in thoughts and feelings, avoidance of the trauma, increased arousal and reactivity, and unwanted reminders of what happened. Many women who have a traumatic birth are not even aware that they’re suffering because of it. Some go on to get help for PTSD or postpartum depression and anxiety. Others push through, but find that their trauma keeps coming back.” Read full blog: https://lnkd.in/edb-apBy

  • What is birth trauma? Birth Trauma is a term to describe symptoms of distress that might be experienced after having gone through, or witnessed, a traumatic birth. In some cases, these symptoms can be enough for a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 1 in 3 parents consider their birth experience to be traumatic, and approximatively 9% of women go on to develop PTSD after a traumatic birth. Birth trauma also affects partners: approximately 1% of dads and partners develop PTSD after seeing their partner go through traumatic birth. You are not alone. You are not to blame. With help, you will be well. 🔷 Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773. You never need a diagnosis to ask for help. 🔷 Call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262. 🔷 In a crisis situation, call or text the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. 🔷 Download the Connect by PSI app from the App Store or Google Play Store. 🔷 Visit postpartum.net for additional programs and resources.

  • “My most difficult years as a military spouse were 2019-2021. I moved three times in one and a half years with a new baby, solo parented, navigated the pandemic, and shortly after having my second son, my husband deployed again — leaving me with a 3-month-old and a toddler. My mental health took a direct hit. How could it not?” shared Patience Riley, a licensed professional counselor at @whoamama_blog, a Mindfulness and Military Moms Support Group Leader at Postpartum Support International, and a staff member for PSI’s Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color @pmhapoc. “This is why we are advocating for The MOMS Act — a policy that would help improve the mental health of military moms. The military culture and lifestyle create additional challenges that make parenting very challenging. Our service members deserve more support to manage this. Thank you, Patience Riley @whoamama_blog for bravely sharing your experience with all of us.
