Powder coating is a finishing process in which a dry powder made of polymer resins and other additives is applied to metal substrates and other materials such as plastics, composites, carbon fiber and medium-density fiberboard. Unlike liquid paint, which is applied using an evaporating solvent, powder coating is applied using spray guns in a process called electrostatic spray deposition. The coated product is then cured (or cross-linked) under heat to form a protective layer. Once heat is applied, the materials crosslink to create a hard layer that is stronger than conventional paint. This guide provides an overview of the “basics” of powder coating for buyers of industrial ovens. It contains a series of questions and answers related to powder coating. Our objective in drafting this guide is to establish a foundation and common set of language that will facilitate further discussion with our customers and prospects. #powdercoating #plastics #materials #composites #manufacturing #industrial #heattreating #heattreatment

Not long ago, Precision Quincy designed and manufactured a batch oven for a customer that heat cleans rolls of fiberglass, which are then sold to its customers in the automotive, aerospace and marine industries. Recycled fiberglass strands from these rolls are used by manufacturers as reinforcement for components made from plastic and other materials. The customer wanted to optimize the volume of fiberglass rolls that could be loaded into a new industrial batch oven using its existing carts. The customer approached us with this objective, and we initiated a collaborative concept and design process using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software that led to the design of an industrial oven with a Perfect Fit. In this case study, we lay out exactly how we did it. #industrial #manufacturing #industrialmanufacturing #computationalfluiddynamics #fluiddynamics #heattreating #heattreatment

We know that developing a disaster recovery (DR) plan has probably never made your to-do list. That said, the risk of disaster for manufacturing companies is always there. Disasters can be caused by fires, floods, storms, explosions, earthquakes or major power outages, to name a few. And these disasters can trigger a domino effect that can cripple every aspect of your business: from your operations, to your customer relationships and financials. This article contains our thoughts on DR with a focus on your industrial ovens. Our hope is that you file this post away and draw upon it if you are faced with scrambling to create a plan after a disaster. #disasterrecovery #industrial #industrialmanufacturing #manufacturing #heattreating #heattreatment

The decision on whether to retrofit or repair an industrial oven is always driven by a return-on-investment (ROI) analysis. ROI = Benefit (or return) on investment / cost of the investment. To calculate ROI, both costs and benefits of the retrofit and repair project need to be quantified and compared to the alternative: whether it is purchasing new equipment or continuing to operate equipment as-is. This guide contains a series of Questions and Answers intended to highlight factors that should be considered in formulating ROI. These insights have been derived from customer feedback and our experience working on these types of projects. It is our hope that these insights help to bridge the communication gap between accountants and engineers in our customer organizations when they are weighing the costs and benefits of a retrofit and repair project. This guide should be read in conjunction with Nine Common Upgrades in Retrofit and Repair Projects for Custom Industrial Ovens. Quantifying the costs and benefits of a retrofit or repair project will depend on the nature of the upgrades. #industrial #industrialoven #manufacturing #industrialmanufacturing #heattreatment #heattreating

Although there can be significant differences in design, all custom industrial ovens are bound by a common set of first-order engineering principles, and any design of an industrial oven must meet the standards promulgated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These principles and standards become the roadmap for any retrofit or repair project for a custom industrial oven. And our engineers have a proven track record of using this roadmap, coupled with modern design and manufacturing technology, to successfully repair and retrofit ANY BRAND of industrial ovens for any application or process. We have outlined nine common upgrades in retrofit and repair projects for custom industrial ovens. These upgrades are not mutually exclusive. Every retrofit and repair project is different and tailored to the needs of the customer and the limitations of its existing equipment. #industrial #industrialequipment #manufacturing #heattreatment #heattreating

As a global leader in medical packaging solutions, Oliver Healthcare Packaging is meticulous about every piece of its production process. The coating process uses high-performance web drying ovens to cure the adhesive and ensure it’s well anchored to the packaging. As a result, Oliver’s industrial ovens play a critical role in production. Among the company’s most prominent products is its water-based adhesive coated packaging. So when one of their drying ovens showed early signs of corrosion, the company was quick to act. With no such thing as a ‘minor particulate issue’ in the medical industry, they wasted no time searching for a new oven to replace the old unit. After scouting the market for a replacement, Phil quickly realized it would become a large capital project. “Our drying ovens, and the drying parameters they adhere to, are key to our production process and critical in providing customers with a safe and effective product,” says Phil Kaufman, Oliver’s Global Process Engineer. Significant investment would be required. Plus, Oliver would need to mitigate against long lead times for new equipment and develop contingencies to ensure production wasn’t impacted while the oven was out of action. In addition, buying a new industrial oven would require that Oliver receive certifications and approvals from its —a process that takes up significant time and expense. Just when Phil thought buying new equipment was the only option, the site’s Plant Manager unearthed an exciting alternative for returning the industrial oven to peak performance: Retrofit, a unique offering by Precision Quincy. Get the complete case study and see how Oliver Healthcare cut capital costs by 60% with a retrofit of their industrial oven. #packaging #healthcarepackaging #industrial #manufacturing #heattreating #heattreatment #industrialovens #coatings
