We're on a mission to break down systemic, healthcare, and financial barriers to eating disorder treatment.

About us

Project HEAL is the only major nonprofit in the U.S. focused on equitable treatment access for eating disorders. Our mission is to breakdown systemic healthcare, and financial barriers to eating disorder treatment for the people that the current system is failing. We offer free treatment placements, insurance navigation support, and cash assistance to people who need care in order to heal, but are being unfairly denied. We're also leading research into treatment inequities, and actively engaged in education and advocacy for eating disorder sufferers, particularly focusing on those who are too often excluded from the conversation.

Feeling constant distress around your body and food is common in BIPOC communities. But receiving support, a diagnosis, and treatment is rare. Today, I'm honored to speak at the BIPOC Eating Disorders Conference (hosted by Dr. Whitney Trotter and Angela Goens) where we'll explore Project HEAL's efforts to address this gap, and transform access to mental healthcare. Join us for "The Equity Imperative: Creating Access to Care" session today at 12:15 PM CT. #EquityInHealthcare #MentalHealth #BIPOCMentalHealth #SocialInnovation #InclusionMatters Ada Williams Prince Rozella (Rozie) Kennedy Erikka D. Journaling can be a great thing for dealing with negative body image. The summer is a time when many people experience a heightened sense of focus on their bodies. Journaling can help reflect and identify those thoughts, where they’re coming from, and how to process them. It can also help identify whether the actions you are engaging in align with your values. So, here are 3 journal prompts to get you started: Imagine you were completely comfortable in your body. What activities would you engage in this summer, and how would doing those make you feel? How does clothing affect your body image? Reflect on two outfits--one that you feel very confident in and one that you don’t. What affects your confidence? Reflect on the media/images you consume in a day or week. How do these make you feel? Do they encourage or discourage you from acting based on your values?

In our diet-obsessed culture, you probably hear blame and judgment associated with binge eating all the time. But in reality, binge eating disorder is a complex brain disorder with neurological, biological, genetic, and environmental causes. Just like any other physical or mental health condition, it’s not an issue that can be resolved with self-control, ‘willpower’, or sheer force. Everyone with BED deserves comprehensive, compassionate care. 💙 Read more about BED at https://buff.ly/3XS7lqb

The LAST DAY to apply for the summer cohort of Body Reborn is Saturday, June 29th! Find out more and apply at the link in bio or https://buff.ly/3RxJBU8 🤔COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM? 💫Body Reborn is a virtual, intersectional community for those who struggle with disordered eating and have faced systemic barriers due to race (e.g. those that originate for people of color). In this 8 week group (from July 8 - August 28), participants engage in education and live discussion around systemic oppression, trauma, and their effects on our relationship with food/body. IS THIS PROGRAM FOR ME? 💫You may gain the most benefit from the space if you (a) are already engaging, comfortably, in these reflections individually; and/or (b) are comfortable in your outpatient care level. The group will discuss potentially challenging topics in a carefully facilitated, supportive space. While we aim for safety, complete trigger avoidance cannot be guaranteed. Space is limited. Therefore, we ask that you please complete the application thoughtfully and authentically as possible. HOW DO I APPLY? 💫Head over to https://buff.ly/3RxJBU8 to learn more about what to expect. If you believe you’re a good fit, click the “Join Here” button which will lead you to an application via Google Forms. Fill out the application, and click “Submit.” You will hear back before the cohort start date if you have been accepted to the program. WHEN DOES THIS COHORT MEET? 💫Groups will last for 8 weeks, with this group starting July 8 and ending August 28. Sessions are held weekly on Mondays 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM ET, as well as Wednesdays 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM ET. All groups are held via Zoom. WHO LEADS THE GROUPS? 💫Our Community Care Facilitators are Leslie Jordan Garcia @liberatiwellness and Serena Pao @serena_pao. We are especially grateful for their commitment to our community. WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS? 💫Please reach out to communitycare@theprojectheal.org.

Discrimination and stigma often prevent people of color from identifying that we or someone we love is dealing with disordered eating. To many, it may still feel like struggling with food is a “white girl” issue; this is simply not true. Eating disorders affect people of color at high rates. Among those that do present with an eating disorder, only 17% of Black women and 41% of Latinas are accurately diagnosed by doctors when presenting with an eating disorder (source at the end). If you think you need support, our Community Care Program might be a good fit. It’s led by Community Care facilitators Leslie Jordan Garcia @liberatiwellness and Serena Pao @serena_pao, two women of color who connect and guide groups in education and live discussion around systemic oppression, trauma, and their effects on our relationship with food/body.
