About us
Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that champions the public interest – your interests – in the halls of power. Since our founding in 1971, we have defended democracy, resisted corporate power and worked to ensure that government works for the people – not for big corporations. We have 400,000 members and supporters throughout the country. We do not participate in partisan political activities or endorse any candidates for elected office. We take no government or corporate money. We use every tool at our disposal to take on big fights – and win. We mobilize activists to grow democratic movements, watchdog Congress, sue the government when it fails to do its job, petition regulatory agencies to safeguard the public and engage in cutting-edge research that effects change.

Remind us why the same people who give the Pentagon $886,000,000,000 are allowed to hold stock in the companies that directly profit off of the military budget? Congress should not be allowed to invest in defense contractors. Rep. Tlaib’s bill would stop this war profiteering.

Let’s get one thing straight: Biden rolling back on EVs would be a monumental failure. Full Stop. Transitioning to EVs is one of the most effective strategies for preventing climate chaos. Auto companies are using the same playbook as Big Oil to prevent progress for clean air, fight climate change, and save lives. We can’t let that happen. #climatecrisis #electricvehicles #regulation #bidenadministration

Low-income people pay for your credit card rewards. The higher interest rates and late fees offset the cost of rewards. Credit card companies charged $12 BILLION in late fees in 2020 alone and slip in provisions to prevent you from suing the company. This disproportionally affects BIPOC and low-income communities. Doesn’t that sound like class warfare to you? We have the receipts: #creditcards #forcedarbitration

We generally count on government regulation to ensure our health and safety, but such health and safety protections are now in jeopardy. Powerful corporations are pushing the Supreme Court to abandon Chevron Deference in hopes of having a weaker regulatory system. However, it is the public that will suffer the consequences if they succeed. #chevrondeference #supremecourt #regulations

Insurance companies are proposing a 42% rate increase in North Carolina. Why? Because climate disasters are getting “too expensive”. This is the same industry that has insured BILLIONS in fossil fuel projects. The hypocrisy is astounding. #climatecrisis #insuranceindustry #fossilfuels
Opinion: Amid climate change, insurance companies abandoned us
