  • Be a Force for Good this Summer. You can be the difference between someone's storm and their sunshine. The Red Cross has teamed up with Regal Entertainment Group for the theatrical release of TWISTERS to help raise funds for Disaster Relief. Swarms of tornadoes and extreme flooding in recent months have tragically taken lives and destroyed entire communities. Most recently, millions of people have endured one of the longest-lasting and strongest heat waves in years, and many communities are still picking up the pieces and recovering from the second most active tornado season on record. The Red Cross is grateful to have partners like Regal Entertainment Group who is lending support to encourage donations during this critical time of year. Dare to be a force of nature this summer. Make a financial donation to support Red Cross Disaster Relief at RedCross.org/Twisters. Customers going to the movie will also be able to round up when they purchase tickets or concessions at Regal Cinemas during the opening weekend of the TWISTERS movie (7/19-7/21).

  • Is there anyone else who feels like Goose? Hot weather can prove dangerous for your furry friends and the American Red Cross has additional steps to help your pets stay safe this summer: 1. Don’t leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open. 2. Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog. 3. Brush cats more often than usual to help prevent problems caused by excessive heat. 4. Avoid hot surfaces, such as asphalt, that can burn your pet’s paws. 5. Don’t walk, run or hike with a dog during the hottest parts of the day or on particularly warm days.

  • Our team is ready to help during disasters 24/7, 365 days a year. In between, they're taking training to stay prepared. Recently, nineteen Red Cross volunteers took advantage of our Shelter Training in Hickory. These skills are currently being put to use as 35 NC volunteers are helping with disasters across our nation, including 26 in Texas dealing with Hurricane Beryl. YOU CAN HELP: Please click, text or call to support Red Cross Disaster Relief and help people affected by disasters like storms and countless other crises. • Thanks Dileep Dadlani for bringing attention to all the ways our Disaster trained volunteers help both down the street and across the country.

I arrived at work at 7:00 a.m. this morning to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Two hundred fifty thousand people in Texas are still without power, and temperatures are in the high 90s, and it's been almost a week. Bear with me. Then, I received a message to prepare for over 20 residents who were coming into the office to receive Red Cross Disaster support after being displaced by a rapid fire that destroyed much of their homes only a mile away. We were ready to be empathetic and supportive when they arrived one by one. These folks were distraught, wearing only the clothes on their backs and worrying about where they would stay and what to do next. Our volunteers quickly returned to the office after working with the Raleigh Fire Department and immediately jumped into action, supporting these displaced community members with expertise, professionalism, and compassion. It was impressive to see the mission in action. What made it real for me was when the residents walked in. I could smell the fresh smoke on their clothes and could not fathom what they were thinking. I just concentrated on our mission of alleviating human suffering, observed the process, and played my small role as concierge, offering snacks, water, and an ear. At the same time, the volunteers performed their roles to support to perfection. This is what the American Red Cross is all about: always there, always ready, and always helping the community, no matter what. No matter where. -----Abbreviated Press Release----- American Red Cross Responding After Raleigh Apartment Fire Raleigh, NC (July 16, 2024) – American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are currently assisting around 25 people displaced by an apartment complex fire on Donald Ross Drive. The Raleigh Fire Department responded to the call. The Red Cross was on the scene soon after the fire broke out early this morning and is currently working with the residents. Our volunteers are providing food, relief items, health and mental health services, and one-on-one support to connect affected residents to additional resources and organizations in their community. The Red Cross is working on getting a shelter open later today to help those residents displaced by the fire. “This is always a difficult time for those affected.” Said Laurie Hughes, Executive Director of the Greater Triangle Area Chapter “But with the excessive heat predicted this week, we want to make sure these residents are in a safe place.” HOW TO HELP Help people affected by disasters and countless other crises by making a gift to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small. People can donate by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

  • Meet Todd Pierce! He donated for the first time in Asheville after some encouragement from his wife, Virginia. She has been donating since she was 18 years old, and wanted her husband to do it with her. Unfortunately, after living abroad for many years, Todd was previously not able to donate. Due to changes in FDA policy, he finally signed up to donate at our Operation Blood Drive event in June! "Last year when that rule was rescinded, my wife said you need to get out there! It took a while to get me in because I had trepidations. But I came in today and it went faster than I thought it would. I'm really glad to be able to give blood finally!" 🙌 THANK YOU, Todd! Your compassion for others is immensely appreciated and will make a big difference in patient's lives!
