Today marks the day in 1865, in Galveston, Texas that the last holdout of slaves were freed following the end of the Civil War, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was supposed to have ended slavery. It is as much a celebration of freedom as it is a reminder of the ongoing work of anti-racism. As Black History Month comes to a close, we want to share this hard-hitting podcast that covers the history of healthcare for African Americans, which as it turns out is really the history of our country's healthcare system as a whole. From Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first African American woman to become a doctor to black doctors coming out in support of Medicare's creation and the government's use of Medicare funds to incentivize desegregation in hospitals, it's as much a story of black resilience and trailblazing as it is a reckoning with the legacy of slavery.

A report released by the Department of Social Services just confirmed what we've been making so much noise about! In a study with 5 other peer states (economically and/or geographically similar states), Connecticut paid less "for 85% of services analyzed." As this journalist notes, "low reimbursement rates create barriers to access for low-income residents." And some legislators are noticing! Stay engaged and hopefully more catch-on!

This video covers the situation in New York, but it's an excellent depiction of what's happening here in Connecticut and around the country. Medicaid hasn't covered the cost of care for a long time, but with the rising costs in the wake of the pandemic, particularly traveling nurse agencies, we need immediate relief and long-lasting Medicaid reform in order to continue providing care.
