About us

S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. (S.W.COLE) is a multi-disciplinary New England based consulting firm. Established by Stephen Cole in 1979 to provide geotechnical engineering services, the firm soon expanded its expertise to include construction materials testing. Our passionate and talented staff includes geotechnical engineers and construction professionals - construction services technicians, special inspectors, construction inspectors, and construction services coordinators. We currently have offices throughout New England: three in Maine (Bangor, Gray and Sidney), one in Massachusetts (Taunton), two in New Hampshire (Londonderry and Somersworth), one (Geisser Engineering division, Riverside/East Providence) in Rhode Island, and one in Vermont (White River Junction). Our services include geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and special inspections. In 2015, we started a wholly-owned subsidiary, S. W. Cole Explorations, Inc., so that we could better service our clients by performing our own test boring explorations. We currently operate drilling rigs based at offices in Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island (Allstate Drilling division). Because the work we do is often required on projects in many different market sectors, S.W.COLE works with clients of all types in all of New England. Our clients have included healthcare, retail, energy and wind, educational, aviation and commercial clients as well as municipal, state and federal agencies. We work often with small and large architectural firms, civil engineering firms and general contractors. Don't forget to join us on Facebook and stay up to date with all things S.W.COLE! • In honor of our 45th anniversary here is another significant moment from our history. 2015 – We formed our explorations subsidiary. The goal of creating this new company was to provide test boring explorations to support our geotechnical engineering services, allowing us more flexibility in scheduling and more control over budgeting. Before we started our explorations company, we had to rely on subcontractors for this service. Now that we can provide drilling services, we are able to be more responsive to our clients’ budget and scheduling needs. As our explorations company expanded, it began to service projects for outside clients in addition to projects involving our engineers. The firm has acquired and brought together several drilling companies from across New England and now operates as Seaboard Drilling, LLC from locations in Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

  • Here is another highlight from our 45-year history! 1998 – We opened our first office in New Hampshire, marking the first time that S. W. Cole expanded beyond the borders of Maine. The move to New Hampshire was a significant step in our growth, setting the stage for continued expansion in New England. We currently have two offices in the Granite State, one in Londonderry and one in Somersworth. Scott Harmon was an early leader of our efforts in New Hampshire, becoming Office Manager of our first New Hampshire office in 1999. Scott continues to be an important part of team, working out of our Somersworth, New Hampshire location as our Construction Services Operations Manager.

  • As part of our intern program, we held a virtual seminar about college debt, personal finance, and budgeting. Although the seminar was aimed at our interns, it was also open to any team member who would like to attend. The program was led by Mike Tuell, John Tuell, and Jillian Thomas, Financial Advisors with ClearPoint Capital. Seminars, like this one, are designed to enhance the experience of our interns while they are working with us.
