Dr. Tracy Dixon-Salazar didn’t set out to become a neuroscientist or a geneticist; she just wanted to help her daughter. Her journey began about thirty years ago, when the then-stay-at-home mom’s 2-year-old daughter, Savannah, began having uncontrollable seizures. Her doctors couldn’t give the family answers, so Dixon-Salazar began her own research. Thirty years later, Dixon-Salazar has a doctorate in neurobiology and neurosciences, and her daughter is thriving. Writer, person on TV. Content chief, San Diego Magazine. Judge on Food Network. Partner Del Mar Wine & Food Festival (coming this September)
Been trying to justify my poetry degree for 25 years. Last night was pretty huge in that pursuit. Once a year, the oldest journalism school in the U.S. (Missouri School of Journalism) and about 100 judges from the national media scene nominate the best writing and art and creative work done by the country’s city magazines. The writers at these media companies—Texas Monthly, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, Philly, etc.—are nuclear talents. A massive honor just to be named next to them. And last night I got the national award for Food Writing. So damn honored. And a cool nod for what the whole creative team at San Diego Magazine is doing. For a couple days, Claire Johnson and I got to trade ideas with some of the top journalists and creatives from cities across the U.S. They’re the people who help build the culture of their cities by telling the stories. Like Stephanie March. I’d listen to her talk or write about food all day. Thanks to the CRMA, University of Missouri, and the wildly talented storytellers we somehow convinced to take the ride with us at SDM.

Our 2024 Best Restaurants list is live and ready for you to scroll, savor, share, and save for future reference. Creating this list is a tradition we’re honored to keep. You, readers, picked your favorites (with 45,000-plus votes, a new record)–the créme de la créme of coffee and cocktails and cheap eats and Chinese food. And our critic and content chief, @heytroyjohnson, picked his. (Troy switched it up a bit, though–he left out a few that have become institutional and duh-of-course, politely placed them over on Mt. Olympus, and made room for other places that deserve that spotlight.) This issue is our billet deux to the people behind those winning restaurants, and to San Diego’s flourishing dining scene as a whole. The top chefs have arrived. Our seafood’s RIGHT there. Our produce is among the best on the planet. Plus, moms and pops who started cooking furiously four years ago (due to The Terrible Thing) are opening kitchens. The proximity to Mexico’s fire and ash and stew culture never hurts. So many things that make San Diego a hallowed ground for food people. We hope the list guides you to new go-to’s, ushers you back to old faithfuls, and inspires you to eat well and eat often. https://lnkd.in/gjV5ECHj

Asymmetric façades, exposed concrete and wood, organic shapes snuggled into the natural environment… This house is a chef’s kiss with windows. Frederick Charles Liebhardt was 26 when he built this house in 1951 for himself, fresh off an apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West (Taliesin Preservation) in Scottsdale. The home sits on a quiet cul-de-sac in La Jolla, but even a passing glance at the house reveals its pedigree—its sharp angles, natural materials, and way of blending into its natural surroundings belie a strong association with Wright, the architectural demi-god. Local designer-and-restaurateur couple Jules Wilson and Paul Basile purchased the home in 2019 (along with Liebhardt’s original office in downtown La Jolla). They’ve been living and entertaining there ever since, making small but painstaking changes along the way. You’ve got to see this place to believe it. Luckily, we took photos. “You know, it was on the market for a year,” Basile says. “I think it needed so much work that people were scared of it.” But when he and Wilson saw an open house sign while driving down Torrey Pines Road one day, all they felt was excitement.
