This summer, we’ve received a record number of questions about heat advisories. Here are the extra measures we take to keep our campers safe. We’re trained to identify and treat heat-related illnesses, but our strong preference is to avoid them completely: — We spend most of our time in the shade of the tree canopy. — We carry extra water and refill frequently. Our staff are extremely creative in getting kids to drink water throughout each day. — Our most strenuous activities and games are played in the morning hours. We reserve the heat of the day for water time and slower-paced games or crafts/activities. — We extend water time in the creeks and river. Keeping our campers safe and cool all summer long! #HeatSafety #SummerCamps #StayCool #SchoolhouseOfWonder #DirtyTiredHappy

Today we join the camp community to celebrate #CampKindnessDay, a day to celebrate core values of kindness, compassion, and generosity at camp. At Schoolhouse of Wonder, kindness and respect are part of our daily culture. We've fostered kind, curious, and confident kids through nature-based outdoor adventures since 1989. Schoolhouse of Wonder is a safe place where children from all backgrounds are nurtured and challenged to be their best selves. Recently, a new counselor shared that he was drawn to the job because of our commitment to creating kind, curious, and confident kids, which aligns with his own values. Our difference starts with respect for ourselves, others, and all living things. We practice open and respectful communication, listening deeply to every camper, family, teacher, and staff member, ensuring everyone feels witnessed, heard, and respected. We believe open-hearted children grow into open-minded adults. #Schoolhouseofwonder #KindConfidentCuriousKids #CampKindness #Respect #YouthNatureCamps

Happy World Snake Day! At Schoolhouse, we teach our campers and field trip students about snakes to raise awareness, dispel myths, foster positive attitudes, alleviate fears, and build confidence. As Rachel Munro points out in *Learning to Love Snakes*, "There are many different resources available to teachers that can help students learn more about snakes such as books and television programs.  However, research suggests that the most effective method is through direct contact with snakes such as viewing and touching. Educational programs that include direct contact with snakes appear to be the best way to change people’s attitudes." Join us in celebrating these fascinating creatures and learning more about them! Check out the articles below to expand your knowledge of Snakes and Reptiles and share the info with your kids and friends. https://lnkd.in/g5_dZdCC https://lnkd.in/gpHx6Mh9 #Schoolhouseofwonder #WorldSnakeDay #outdoorexploration #YouthNatureCamps #Raleigh #durham #ChapelHill #Reptiles #Snakes #herpetology #ophiology #DirtyTiredHappy

Jennifer Costanza, thank you for your dedication to this issue and for sharing this information. Please take a look at this report detailing the opportunities available to help older forests adapt to changing climate and disturbances.

As we continue to face new challenges brought about by changing climates, it’s important that we fully understand what threatens our nation’s forests and grasslands. A recent report released today examines how mature and old growth forests are at risk to wildfire, insects, disease and more. These forests are vital to providing clean water, absorbing carbon, and supplying habitat for wildlife. Understanding what threatens these special forests is crucial to stewarding and restoring them.
