👁️ 👉 👈 👁️ It's #WorldEmojiDay! To mark the occasion, we're sharing about Bruce Nauman's "Double Poke in the Eye II," on view in "Poke in the Eye: Art of the West Coast Counterculture" at SAM. "Double Poke in the Eye II" (1985) exemplifies Nauman's radical yet irreverent contemporary art practice. Utilizing neon tubing and static animation—mediums commonly associated with commercial advertisements—Nauman creates a vignette of human action and retort. The resulting work can be interpreted in one of two ways: as either humorous and playful or vengeful and violent. visitsam.org/pokeintheeye [📸 Chloe Collyer]

🎂 Happy birthday to Rembrandt van Rijn! Rembrandt was a towering figure in 17th-century Baroque art whose artistic innovations were without precedent. "SAM on Paper: Rembrandt’s Etchings" highlights SAM's collection of Old Master prints and drawings with a selection of etchings by the iconic Dutch artist (who would have been 418 today). Check it out this week in SAM's fourth floor galleries! https://lnkd.in/g_msg79a

Tucked away in a forest on the outskirts of Seattle sits Enid Smith Becker's cozy, sun-filled art studio. There, the SAM Gallery artist creates semi-abstracted landscape paintings that capture a mood or an emotion. Becker begins each new artwork by searching through her source photographs, selecting a photo, and making a quick sketch. At her easel, she paints the background landscape first, then incorporates panels that overlap the landscape, offering multiple views of the same subject. She believes that art can remind people of their connection to the natural world and encourage them to protect the beaches and forests they love. Visit #SAMBlog to learn about Becker's artistic process in the latest installment of our "In the Studio" series and see her latest artworks in "Reveal" at SAM Gallery through Sunday, August 4. https://lnkd.in/gEsRjiNS
