“Within my first hour at Shepherd Center, they did a swallow test, and I was soon eating a ham and cheese sandwich. That night, they started weaning me off the medications I was on to help lift the fog of trauma and help me communicate my needs and start being responsible for my care again,” said Adam Bacon, who transferred to Shepherd Center after sustaining a spinal cord injury. Our inpatients often share this sentiment. At Shepherd Center, we provide specialized treatment and therapy as soon as possible after patients and families arrive. “People think that patients in the ICU are not therapy-ready, but our philosophy is that rehab should start on day one,” explains Shepherd’s Chief Nursing Officer, Tiffany LeCroy, MSN, RN, CRRN, FNP-C, ACNS-BC, FARN. “Patients can be evaluated by each of the disciplines of therapy to determine the plan of care. It helps get to the next steps more quickly.” Our board-certified critical care specialists, physiatrists, and neurologists work seamlessly with our multi-disciplinary care team to help patients begin rehabilitation as soon as possible while also providing ventilator management and weaning, preventing and managing secondary complications, and reducing the number of transfers between hospitals. We are fortunate to have our own intensive care unit (ICU), which equips us to provide exceptional care for patients with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and other neurological conditions.

Scenes from Shepherd Center's 2024 Project Rollway fashion show 🤳 This year’s patients blew us away by taking the stage by storm! Shepherd Center’s Adolescent Rehabilitation Program focuses on returning our youth to the highest level of function and independence possible after spinal cord or brain injury or illness. As a proud sponsor, Andee’s Army donates proceeds raised at Evening of Hope to fund models’ clothing and support programs for individuals affected by brain and spinal cord injuries. The Disability Pride flag beautifully symbolizes the diversity within the disability community, highlighting the importance of accessibility and inclusion for all. As we celebrate #DisabilityPrideMonth, let’s continue to cut through barriers and advocate for a world where everyone is seen, heard, and valued.

July is #DisabilityPrideMonth, generating awareness of #Accessibility and #Inclusion for all. The landmark #ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was passed on July 26, 1990, supported by #HLAA and other organizations. The Disability Pride flag was originally created in 2017 to represent people with a range of #Disabilities. Thanks to Hearing Loss Live for this helpful explainer graphic: Against a dark gray background are five diagonal stripes (which symbolize cutting through barriers) in five colors: red for physical disabilities, light gold for neurodivergence, light gray for invisible disabilities, light blue for mental illness and green for sensory disabilities. #HearingLoss is considered both a sensory and an invisible disability. #DisabilityPride #DisabilityAwareness National Disability Rights Network National Association of the Deaf Gallaudet Hearing Health Foundation Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) American Association of People with Disabilities American Council of the Blind National Federation of the Blind Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Muscular Dystrophy Association United Spinal Association Disability:IN The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Hearing Industries Association Disability Scoop CIICA

Nothing can keep a good dog down! Gordon Thompson, one of our amazing Day Program patients, just completed a paw-some therapy session with a very special goal in mind – walking his furry best friend! Gordon practiced endurance while walking with a rollator and trekking poles on various terrains, including sidewalks, slopes, streets, and a wooden bridge. He also worked on managing his dog on a leash while using the equipment, ensuring he could handle his pup around other pedestrians and dogs. His daughter and wife were right there, cheering him on every step of the way! 🐾❤️ Way to go, Gordon! You're paws-itively amazing! 🦮✨ Thank you to recreational therapist Jacob Carenbeur, CTRS, for putting this wonderful therapy session together. Just another #ShepherdDayInTheLife

The all-new HBO #QuadGods documentary is receiving rave reviews, particularly regarding how the subjects are treated. It is much less a story about exploring how inspiring their stories are as they triumph through adversity. It is much more about seeing how they navigate a world Blake Hunt, one of the eight members of the Quad Gods, the world’s first all-quadriplegic esports team, says “isn’t really designed for us.” If you’re ready for a different perspective on disability, one that doesn’t define someone by their medical condition but rather by their individual quirks, personalities, and life experiences, check out Quad Gods, streaming now on HBO Max. #QuadGods #HBO #Esports #DisabilityRepresentation #InclusionMatters #AdaptiveGaming #DisabilityAwareness #GamingCommunity
