#BlackTechFutures Research Institute's mission is to build Black dreams, champion Black futures, and amplify Black joy in the modern, digital age. It emerged out of a frustration that showed that in all parts of a city's tech ecosystem, Black people faced obstacles and discrimination and that too often technology was taught through the lens of innovation and change, rather than as a social justice space that people could create and use. The work of #BlackTechFutures and its cofounder Fallon W. has shaped the way we at Siegel think about Public Interest Technology at its core. That's why we're excited to share their case study, the latest addition to our PIT Case Study Series. Discover how #BlackTechFutures transformed frustration into a powerful national and global network, centered around the expertise and history of Black institutions and rooted in joy and hope, on our website now! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ebdphKt5

Much of the research on AI in the workplace focuses on automation: how AI can perform tasks currently done by workers, which occupations are most at risk, and which jobs might benefit from AI assistance. While these are crucial questions, they overlook many other aspects of how AI might impact work. "If we think about AI as a general purpose technology that can be applied to almost every field or industry, we can see that AI will have effects not just on what workers do or the tasks that they complete, but also how they’re managed, the design and flow of their jobs, the structures and hierarchies of the workplace, and so on," says Siegel In-House Research Fellow and labor economist Owen Davis. AI has the potential to shift power dynamics in the workplace and bargaining context, including monitoring and surveillance, predictive analytics in wage bargaining, and algorithmic management systems that diminish worker autonomy. Read our latest Fellow Q&A, where Davis explores these issues from his recent working paper, "Artificial Intelligence and Worker Power," addressing questions about workers, workplaces, and policy frameworks. 🔗 Find it on the Siegel website. https://lnkd.in/edrpZGkH

Our team had a blast at the Education Writers Association National Seminar in Las Vegas last month. We celebrated student award finalists Shoaa Khan, Bree Campbell and Jose Santana, reconnected with friends from across the country, and co-led a session with Chalkbeat on youth-adult reporting collaborations. Great new piece in The Hechinger Report covering our national Learning Progression creation and the Stage 1 Chicago summit: https://lnkd.in/gbjQdh9u From Javeria Salman in Future of Learning: "I’ve been reporting on data science education for two years now, and it’s become clear to me that what’s missing is a national framework for teaching data skills and literacy, similar to the Common Core standards for math or the Next Generation Science Standards." Stay tuned for some exciting updates this August and ways to get involved. Sending a big congratulations to Greg Rosenbaum who has truly shaped the way Siegel thinks about engagement and activation not only at SXSW EDU but at conferences across the board. We could not be more excited to work alongside you in this next chapter 🎉
I have big news to share today. After 15 years, I am stepping away from SXSW EDU and passing the baton to my good friend and colleague, Greg Rosenbaum who helped me stand up the business and conference in 2010. While this chapter is closing for me, more to come on what’s next, after a short respite. Please read more here:

We are still not getting this conversation about technology in classrooms right. In a time when research indicates that 35% of K-12 teachers are uncertain about the benefits or harms of using AI tools in the classroom, and sweeping recommendations are being thrown at parents and practitioners left and right, it is crucial to remember our core mission: to inform and equip today’s students to thrive as citizens of an increasingly digital democracy. Read Siegel President and Executive Director Katy Knight latest op-ed with Forbes Nonprofit Council where she reminds whats at stake if we don't sort through the complex, difficult questions, and the growing body of knowledge that can guide us through more nuanced conversations about AI in education. 🔗 Read the article on Forbes and Siegel's insight page. https://lnkd.in/eZhJebAr

How will AI change what we know and understand about the world? This was the question our Founder and Chairman David Siegel was charged with when he was invited to speak at the celebration for Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)'s five-year anniversary. With thought leaders and experts tackling some of the most pressing issues in the age of AI, the day explored how we can ensure AI technology is developed with humans at the center. Watch David's discussion with Professor Fei-Fei Li, where they delve into topics such as reasoning versus prediction, the long-term impact of AI on scientific research and departmental structures, and the interdisciplinary nature of AI. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d5u9fY6y
