About us
The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Soybean Value Chain Research (Soybean Innovation Lab, SIL) is the United States Agency for International Development’s only comprehensive program dedicated to soybean research for development. The Soybean Innovation Lab is building a foundation for soybean production in Africa by developing the knowledge, innovation, and technologies to enable successful soybean production. As part of the Feed the Future initiative, the Soybean Innovation Lab works to reduce global poverty and hunger by accelerating growth in the agriculture sector through improvements in agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers.

From 2000 to 2019, the African Seed Access Index (TASAI) reported an average release of only 0.08 soybean varieties per country annually. Enhancing Soybean Production in Zambia: SIL and SCCI Partner for Progress In May 2024, the Soybean Innovation Lab (SIL) and the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) held a pivotal meeting in Lusaka with top Zambian seed companies. Their goal? To boost soybean production from under 1 million to 3 million metric tons by 2026. High-quality seeds are key to agricultural success. SIL and SCCI are enhancing seed quality control, ensuring farmers receive the best planting materials. Programs like the Pan African Variety Trials, Agronomic SMART Farm Trials, and SMART QC Program are central to this effort. Discover MelkoSB-5: Ethiopia's new high-yielding soybean variety offering significant advances in yield, disease resistance, and quality. This variety, released by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) with the support of the Soybean Innovation Lab (SIL), is a cross between lines from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The resulting soybean variety boasts an astounding 55.58% yield increase over commercial varieties. Easy Reaper: Making Grain Harvesting Affordable for Small-Scale Farmers. In partnership with Living Energy Farm and the University of Missouri, the Soybean Innovation Lab has developed the Easy Reaper, a simplified combine harvester now in production for smallholder farmers across Africa. Benefits of the Easy Reaper: · 80% cheaper to build · Easy to operate and maintain · Can be pulled by draft animals or small tractors · Manufacturable in welding shops, far from industrial facilities The official launch took place on the first weekend of June, with a harvest demonstration and press conference at Living Energy Farm, Virginia.
