The American Society of Civil Engineers Florida Section has selected Superior’s Sanibel Causeway Emergency and Permanent Reconstruction as its 2024 “Project of the Year.” Completed in a joint venture with The de Moya Group, Inc. on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation, the emergency repairs project restored the only access to Sanibel Island in the wake of Hurricane Ian in just 15 days — nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. The long-term repairs reinforced the causeway, improving resilience against future storms. To complete the permanent repairs, the JV team raised the island’s roadways by two feet and the seawalls by three feet. They replaced the articulating block coastal protection with marine mattress, bank and shore riprap, and a much larger and denser granite armor stone. They also replaced the mechanically stabilized earth walls and existing seawalls with cantilever steel sheet piles, incorporating additional support from combination walls, known as king piles, at locations where heavier section properties were needed. The project was completed on schedule, and permanent roadway lanes were opened on December 22, 2023. Area Manager Toby Mazzoni accepted the award on Superior’s behalf at the ASCE Florida Section Annual Conference held last week at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Bonita Springs.
